The 2024 Scripps National Spelling Bee came down to a spell-off for the second time ever, and Bruhat Soma walked away as the 2024 champion.
Soma, 12, spelled 29 words correctly in 90 seconds the spell-off round, defeating fellow finalist Faizan Zaki, also 12, who spelled 20 words correctly in the same span. The playoff round was added to the competition in 2021 and has been used just once before, with the 2022 champion spelling 22 words correctly.
A seventh grader from St. Petersburg, Florida, Soma won the 96th edition of the contest, which first was held in 1925.
Winners cannot compete again, so Soma will retire on top with his $50,000 prize. Zaki, a sixth grader from Dallas, will have the opportunity to return to the competition next year.

Neither Soma nor Zaki spelled a word or got a question wrong in the first 14 rounds, which alternated between spelling questions and vocabulary questions. But Soma proved quicker in the 90-second spell-off, winning 29-20.
The lightning round capped of a three-day event in National Harbor, Maryland, just outside Washington, D.C. Students who were under age 15 and who had not graduated eighth grade as of Aug. 31, 2023, were eligible to compete.
