Toronto FC forward Jozy Altidore will miss 4-6 weeks after undergoing surgery to remove bone fragments from his foot on Tuesday, the club has announced.
Altidore has missed TFC's last two MLS matches, and the defending champions will now have to do without the U.S. national team striker for an extended period.
TFC's title defense is off to a rocky start, as Greg Vanney's side has won just two of its first seven matches, leaving the club in 10th place in the Eastern Conference.
The Canadian side had to rotate its squad in the season's first two months as it chased a CONCACAF Champions League title, coming up just short when it fell to Chivas in the final.
With Altidore out, Tosaint Ricketts and Jordan Hamilton will likely pick up the majority of the minutes left open by the American striker's absence.
Altidore has made 11 appearances in all competitions this season, tallying five goals and two assists.
TFC faces the Seattle Sounders on Wednesday in a rematch of the last two MLS Cup finals.
