Tiger Woods' score: Results, highlights from Round 2 at Players Championship image

The island green on the 17th hole at TPC Sawgrass is legendary because of how picturesque and unique it is. But beyond the facade, it can also be notoriously difficult.

Tiger Woods experienced the worst the hole has to offer Friday, carding a quadruple bogey and wiping out what started as an encouraging second round at The Players Championship.

Woods hit his tee shot in the water and followed it up with another pitch into the drink. He took three more shots to find the hole.

Woods made a brief cameo in the top 10 just one hole prior and was solid throughout the rest of the round, which will surely make him wonder what could have been had he avoided the quadruple bogey. He shot a 3-under 71, one stroke worse than his Round 1 performance.

At the conclusion of his round, five strokes separated Woods from the leaders, the same deficit he faced after Thursday.

Plenty of other golfers still need to finish their rounds, but Woods seems to be in good shape to make the cut. The question is how far off the lead will he be when Friday concludes.

(All times Eastern)

Hole 9: Par 5, 596 yards

Missed opportunity for a birdie to finish the round, as a birdie putt couldn't fall and Woods shoots a 1 under for the round.

Hole 8: Par 3, 235 yards

Tee shot goes to the right by about 25 feet. Woods will settle for a two-putt par as he heads to the final hole down six strokes.

Hole 7: Par 4, 456 yards

How about that? A strong approach shot sets up a tap-in for birdie from about six inches away, and Woods is back under par for the day.

Hole 6: Par 4, 399 yards

Another two-putt par. Becoming a theme on the front nine for Woods over the first two days.

Hole 5: Par 4, 466 yards

Woods isn't doing himself any favors with some of his recent approach shots. They are making the green but have set up long birdie putts, which have resulted in three straight pars.

Hole 4: Par 4, 394 yards

Woods escapes a tee shot into the rough by saving par on a 4-foot putt.

Hole 3: Par 3, 174 yards

Tee shot lands on the green but is well short of the hole. Woods two-putts from about 40 feet for par.

Hole 2: Par 5, 524 yards

Woods gains a stroke with a much-needed birdie on the par five. He will need a couple more to get back to where he was before the quadruple bogey.

Hole 1: Par 4, 430 yards

The 34-foot putt for birdie is short and that's now two straight pars for Woods. He's not making any headway up the leaderboard.

Hole 18: Par 4, 460 yards

Crucial par save for Woods, who is suddenly teetering near the cut line. He will need to turn these pars into birdies if he wants to get back to where he was.

Hole 17: Par 3, 146 yards

Absolute disaster on the island green 17th for Woods. His tee shot rolls into the water, and then he drops and pitches it again into the water.  Another pitch and a two-putt gives him a quadruple bogey and he is now 1-over par for the round. What a catastrophe.

Hole 16: Par 5, 509 yards

For the second straight day, Woods birdies No. 16. He narrowly avoided the water hazard on his second shot, and wound up with a harmless two-putt. He is now just two strokes off the lead.

Hole 15: Par 4, 477 yards

Another rather routine par and Woods stays the course. The mid-range putt didn't fall for birdie, but the gimme make for par was almost as crucial.

Hole 14: Par 4, 482 yards

Woods cards a routine par, not bad since No. 14 is historically his worst hole at TPC.

Hole 13: Par 3, 152 yards

Make it back-to-back birdies! Woods sinks the putt from the fringe to make quick work of the par three. He is moving swiftly up the leaderboard.

Hole 12: Par 4, 304 yards

Woods nearly drives the green on the short par four and an excellent pitch leads to an easy tap-in. He's on the board with his first birdie of the round.

Hole 11: Par 5, 565 yards

Plagued by a mediocre performance on par fives yesterday, Woods two-putts again from inside 15 feet, setting for his third par out of the quintet of par fives thus far in the tournament.

Hole 10: Par 4, 405 yards

Pretty standard par to start the round, but Woods missed a 15 foot putt for birdie.
