And so Andy Murray made Britain rejoice, even if fans at Wimbledon's Centre Court on Sunday were rude enough to jeer (if not boo) Britain's prime minister.
Such is the state of things in the disjointed United Kingdom, where a few hours of national pride can vanish in the drop of a name.

Credit Murray for the best return of serve in the post-match. That had a high degree of difficulty, given the choke hold he can on the championship trophy.
Gawkers got to see plenty of celebrities in the men's championship match. They exercised their lungs cheering for Murray in a three-set sweep of Canada's Milos Raonic. How dare a colonial threaten Britain's hero?

At courtside were Wills and Kate, or the Royal Knight of the Garter and his lady, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge. Actors Bradley Cooper (a Yank!), Hugh Grant and Benedict Cumberbatch drew camera lenses their way. So too did England's Prime Minister David Cameron, who Murray mentioned, and Scotland's First Minister Nicola Sturgeon.

Wonder what Cooper did? Whatever he said, Irina Shayk was not amused. In this section of the royal box, love meant nothing.
For those who care, British publication The Telegraph tapped out a list of royals in the stands. Another Brit pub, the Daily Mail, conveniently indentified nearly everyone in Ye Olde Royale Boxe. Among them was a rather Pythonesque couple, Lady Freddie Windsor and Lord Freddie Windsor.
Fittingly, the Irish Examiner noted potshots taken on Twitter about the rather exclusive crowd seated at Centre Court.
There's nothing quite like snark and sarcasm.
90% of that crowd put on gardening gloves to go into the garden and give instructions to the gardener. #Wimbledon

The whole #Wimbledon crowd collectively just groaned "Ohhhhhhh" at the sun coming out.

British summer, summed up.
Good fun. But it was a far different crowd from the one at Saturday's women's title match. With Serena Williams playing and winning, spectators included entertainment figures Ellen DeGeneres, Beyonce and Jay Z.
High drama on the court; highfalutin off it on Sunday.
Murray also gave with typical Scottish reserve a shout-out to his coach, the joyous Ivan Lendl.

Several observers suggested Lendl was on holiday from Easter Island.
But he did, for a brief instant, crack a smile, a very small one, and emote. Then, Ivan the Tiki returned.
