Nadal is also through to the second round of the doubles action alongside Wimbledon champion Carlos Alcaraz. The Spanish duo will next face Dutch pair Tallon Griekspoor and Wesley Koolhof.

In a quirk of the draw, Alcaraz will first face Griekspoor in the singles competition, but it is his countryman who will likely dominate the attention on Day 3.

The king of the clay returns to his stomping ground at Roland-Garros looking for a second gold medal in the singles competition, after he won the title at Beijing 2008. It would be his third gold medal overall, having also won the doubles at Rio 2016.

Djokovic is seeking his first gold medal — his only Olympic success came with a bronze in 2008. He lost to Nadal that year in the semifinals on the Spaniard's way to the gold.
