U.S. Open 2016: John Isner advances with another long, long victory image

John Isner certainly gets his money's worth in matches at Grand Slam tournaments.

In advancing to the U.S. Open's third round, Isner needed four sets — including one he lost in a 12-10 tiebreaker. Which is long, but nothing compared to his remarkable Wimbledon match in 2010.

Consider: That contest at the All England Club went five sets; it lasted 11 hours, 7 minutes over three days; and the score was …

6-4, 3-6, 6-7 (7), 7-6 (3), 70-68.

That last number isn't a typo. It took 138 games to decide the set, and thus the match against Nicolas Mahut of France.

So really, Isner's four-set win on Wednesday was a walk in the park by comparison. Still, it's a good bet fans who come to Isner matches will see a lot of tennis.

Remember, he won his opening match 3-6, 4-6, 7-6 (5), 6-2, 7-6 (3) — in 3½ hours.

Meanwhile, Canada's Milos Raonic, the men's fifth seed, was in a struggle against American player Ryan Harrison. Top seed Novak Djokovic advanced when his scheduled opponent withdrew because of injury.

Wednesday's match against Steve Darcis of Belgium took three minutes shy of three hours. Darcis, by the way, played for 4 hours, 11 minutes on Monday.

Yes, that much tennis takes a toll. Isner needed treatment on a knee and blisters on a foot before it was over. But he remained perfect in nine second-round matches.

The other certainty of an Isner match is seeing aces. At 6-10, Isner has a cannon-like serve that he used to fire 38 aces on Wednesday.

That power is nice, but Isner has trouble in other areas. He has been the best U.S. player for years, but at the Open he is the 20th seed, behind Steve Johnson.

Anyone looking for another long match would be smart to consider Isner's third-round contest on Friday. His opponent: Kyle Edmund of Britain.
