Keys' mission is to win and join Serena and Venus Williams in the Round of 16. The sisters advanced Saturday with strong performances. Serena has said Keys is her predecessor.
Sunday's primetime special is No. 2 seed Angelique Kerber against No. 14 Petra Kvitova. NOTE: The Kvitova-Kerber match will be played Sunday, beginning at 7 p.m. ET. There are four matches on Sunday, four on Monday.
Wozniacki held the women's No. 1 ranking at her peak. And she will be formidable, especially since Keys had a difficult third-round match. She defeated Japan's Naomi Osaka 7-5, 4-6, 7-6 (3), but had to recover from being down 5-1 in the third set.
That match could be a defining moment for Keys, who is 21 years old. Serena is 34, Venus 36, so the door is open for Keys to become the next U.S. standard.
“I just knew that if I stayed in the match that I could maybe have a chance to come back and get back in it,” Keys told media members. “The crowd today was amazing, and getting to play at your home slam on Ashe is a feeling like you can't even describe.”
It was, she said, a "step up or lose" moment. She delivered and gained a lesson on how to react in critical situations. Keys will be better for her third-round scare, and will also benefit from facing Wozniacki.
Here is the U.S. Open schedule for women's matches.
