Wednesday also brings second-round matches for No. 2 women's seed Angelique Kerber in a prime-time match. Four U.S. players are due under the lights, including No. 8 seed Madison Keys.
Other American women in action: Lauren Davis, Shelby Rogers vs. Catherine Bellis, and Kayla Day against Keys.
McHale defeated first-round opponent Mona Barthel of Germany on Monday. Now, she faces Roberta Vinci, the seventh seed who was runner-up in 2015's Open. Vinci eliminated Serena Williams in last year's semifinals.
At Wimbledon, McHale, age, won a fist-set tiebreaker against Williams before losing in three sets. It was a springboard performance.
"There were a lot of positives I took from my Serena match," McHale told The Associated Press. "The first and most important for me being that I can compete with the best. That match has really motivated me to keep working and improving."
Here is the schedule for Aug. 31's women's matches in the 2016 U.S. Open. The tennis center is located in Flushing Meadows, in the New York City borough of Queens.
