The "King of Clay" will look to add another jewel to his crown Sunday.
Rafael Nadal, who already holds the record with 13 French Open singles titles, will face off in the 2022 final against Casper Ruud, the 23-year-old Norwegian playing in his first Grand Slam final.
A victory Sunday at Roland Garros would give Nadal 22 Grand Slam titles, so the contrast in experience that will be on display at Court Philippe Chatrier is clear.
Don't discount Ruud, though. He excels on clay courts, having won seven of his eight ATP tournament titles on the surface, and he has been battle-tested during his run through the draw in Paris this year, beginning with a five-set victory in his opening match.

Where would Rafael Nadal rank among the oldest Grand Slam champions?
Should Nadal win the 2022 French Open at the age of 36, he'd become one of the oldest players to win a Grand Slam title.
Only two other players have won a Grand Slam aged 36 or older with Ken Rosewall and Roger Federer currently holding that honor.
Rosewall is the current oldest player to have triumphed at a Grand Slam when he did so at the Australian Open in 1972 at the age of 37 years, one month and 24 days.
Federer is the next best when he won the same tournament in 2018 aged 36 years, five months and seven days.
Nadal would slot into fourth on the current list of oldest Grand Slam winners if he was to win the 2022 French Open.
Player | Age | Title | Year |
---|---|---|---|
Ken Rosewall | 37 years, 1 month, 24 days | Australian Open | 1972 |
Roger Federer | 36 years, 5 months, 7 days | Australian Open | 2018 |
Ken Rosewall | 36 years, 4 months, 5 days | Australian Open | 1971 |
Roger Federer | 35 years, 10 months, 26 days | Wimbledon | 2017 |
Ken Rosewall | 35 years, 10 months | US Open | 1970 |
Rafael Nadal | 35 years, 7 months, 14 days | Australian Open | 2022 |
Will Nadal become the oldest French Open winner?
While Nadal won't become the oldest Grand Slam champion should he triumph at Roland-Garros in 2022, he will make more history at the venue.
The Spaniard will become the oldest French Open winner should he lift the title this year and replace current record-holder Andres Gimeno.
Gimeno won the tournament in 1972 aged 34 years, nine months and 19 days. Should Nadal win in 2022 he will smash that record by over 15 months.
Remarkably, the Spaniard has won the French Open four times since turning 30 and first lifted the title as a 19-year-old in 2005.
