World Cup 2014: Miguel Herrera set to continue as Mexico coach image

Miguel Herrera’s reign as coach of Mexico’s national team is set to be extended, with Mexican soccer federation (FMF) president Justino Compean saying Friday both parties are in agreement over his continuation.

“We’re renewing Miguel Herrera’s contract so he stays as coach of the national team for Russia 2018,” Compean said in a news conference in Rio de Janeiro. “We’re going with him and hopefully he lasts.”

“His work was extraordinary (in Brazil),” Compean added. “We’re pleased because in the short time he had to work, he did it very well, achieving very good results in the style of play and in what the national team transmitted.”

Compean said the federation is in talks with Herrera, but he doesn’t expect any problems in reaching an agreement.

“He’s in favor of continuing and us too,” he said.

The news conference took place to announce the extension of the FMF’s contract with Adidas. The German sportswear manufacturer will provide kits for all Mexico’s national teams up until 2022.

Finally, Compean said El Tri is likely to play the Netherlands away in November and will schedule two friendly games in Mexico and two others in the United States before the end of 2014.
