The U.S. is coming off a dominant performance after sweeping the group stage 3-0 as the players shift their focus toward the knockout stage of the 2019 FIFA Women's World Cup.

Spain finished second in Group B behind Germany and has shown a tremendous amount of growth over the past decade as it entered France's tournament with one of the nation's most talented teams. Spain beat South Africa 3-1, but lost to Germany and its game against China ended in a draw.

The Americans, on the other hand, set several records during the group stage and have the momentum entering the round of 16 after big wins against Thailand, Chile and Sweden.

Here's what you need to know:

How many times has the U.S. played Spain?

The United States and Spain have met only once in their history. Their first meeting was January 22 in Alicante, Spain, during an international friendly. The U.S. won 1-0, though the game was scoreless at halftime.

Who is the Spain player to watch?

Jennifer Hermoso: The forward leads Spain with 30 career goals, nine assists and 71 caps, making her one of the most experienced players on Spain's roster. She was impressive during World Cup qualifying as she scored seven goals, and she was even more impressive through the group stage as she netted a brace in Spain's match against South Africa. She created 11 chances during the group stage, the third most of any player in the tournament.

What are three Opta facts to know?

  • The Americans have never lost in the quarterfinal stage of the Women’s World Cup (6W-1D), outscoring opponents 21-4 in the round.

  • Spain’s Marta Corredera has taken six shots from outside the box, tied for the second-most during the group stage. She has yet to score from one of those shots and has put just two on target.

  • The US has scored 18 goals through the group stage, tied for their second most at a World Cup. They need seven more goals to tie their biggest haul at a World Cup and eight to set a new World Cup record for an entire tournament.

Prediction

USA 3, Spain 0

Spain is certainly growing into its talent with a young yet experienced roster, but it still won't be a match for the United States. The Americans bring more experience and likely will keep another clean sheet through the first game of the knockout stage.
