Will Kylian Mbappe play against Real Madrid? PSG star injured in training, could miss Champions League match image

Kylian Mbappe has emerged as a doubt for Paris Saint-Germain's Champions League clash with Real Madrid after picking up an injury in training, according to multiple reports including GOAL.com.

The 23-year-old fired PSG to a late 1-0 win in the first leg of the round of 16 tie at Parc des Princes to give the Ligue 1 leaders a narrow lead to take to Santiago Bernabeu.

However, Mauricio Pochettino's side may have to finish the job without Mbappe if he fails to shake off a fresh knock.

Mbappe has missed four matches all season for PSG, and the French club has won just one of those games, shut out in two and scoring one or fewer goals in three.

What is the latest Kylian Mbappe injury news?

Mbappe sustained an injury during a PSG training session on Monday morning.

The injury is a foot problem, according to ESPN. The ESPN report states that he suffered the injury in a 50-50 challenge with an unnamed teammate, and an MRI has ruled out a fracture to ease the club's initial fears. Mbappe will now undergo further medical exams to assess the extent and type of the damage.

Video posted on social media and shared by TUDN reporter Luis Omar Tapia seems to show PSG teammate Idrissa Gyeye throwing in a dangerous tackle, stamping directly on top of Mbappe's left foot.

Depending on the severity of the issue, the Frenchman could miss the club's midweek trip to Madrid to focus on his recovery.

Later on Monday, the club released an official statement on Mbappe's injury. "Kylian Mbappe suffered an injury to his left foot in training today," read the statement. "He received treatment this afternoon. The medical examination is reassuring and a new update will be given in 24 hours."

On Tuesday morning, Mbappe was included in PSG's squad for the match against Real Madrid. This doesn't necessarily mean he will be fit to play, but it at least means that PSG has afforded a roster space to a player it believes has a chance to contribute.

According to multiple reports on late Tuesday, including Goal.com, Mbappe trained "normally" earlier in the day "with no suggestion that his foot was bothering him," leaving the star in contention to play in Wednesday's match.

What would Mbappe's absence mean for PSG?

Mbappe is PSG's top scorer this season with 24 goals to his name from 34 appearances, and it has also been suggested that the outcome of the Champions League clash with the Blancos will have a major bearing on his future.

He was critical in the 1-0 first-leg victory, scoring the game's only goal and proving dangerous throughout the match. Mbappe torched Real Madrid full-back Dani Carvajal, with the Frenchman winning four of his six take-ons and losing possession just 13 times across 71 touches.

The 23-year-old scored a pair and assisted another in his last appearance, a Ligue 1 win over St. Etienne in late February.

Mbappe was absent from PSG's most recent Ligue 1 fixture on Saturday due to suspension. Lionel Messi took the World Cup winner's spot in the number nine role, supported by Neymar and Angel Di Maria, but the French giants were shut out in a surprise 1-0 defeat at Nice. Messi didn't take a single shot, with the entire PSG squad managing just two shots on target across the 90 minutes.

GOAL has reported that Madrid are confident of signing Mbappe on a free transfer when his contract expires this summer, and knocking PSG out of Europe would surely boost their chances of sealing a deal as the Parisians continue to struggle to tie him down to fresh terms.
