Who has been left out of England's Euro 2024 squad: Maguire, Grealish and Maddison omitted from Gareth Southgate's plans image

England head coach Gareth Southgate concluded his planning for Euro 2024 on June 6, ahead of his squad making the trip to Germany, with several big names missing out on the final 26.

Southgate used the pre-tournament friendly against Bosnia & Herzegovina to assess his options and a final call was made shortly afterwards.

Injuries and mixed club form played a key role in his decisions, with experienced defender Harry Maguire ruled out with a calf problem, and James Maddison and Jack Grealish omitted.

Southgate's squad headed to Germany with just 13 of the 26 players also in his 2022 World Cup roster.

Who has been left out of England's Euro 2024 squad?

Southgate was required to remove seven players from his provisional squad to meet the UEFA final deadline of Friday, June 7.

Maguire, Grealish and Maddison are the eye-catching names not with the team in Germany, alongside Liverpool duo Curtis Jones and Jarrell Quansah, Burnley goalkeeper James Trafford and Everton's Jarrad Branthwaite.

Harry Maguire

  • England Caps/Goals: 63/7
  • Club: Manchester United

A controversial choice for some England fans, but Southgate had previously remained loyal to Maguire throughout his tenure, despite his struggles at club level with Manchester United.

Maguire was a first-choice pick for Southgate's England at the last three tournaments, including defeat to Italy in the Euro 2020 final, where he scored in the penalty shootout at Wembley.

Injury is the primary reason for Maguire's missing out, after joining up with the initial squad with a calf injury that forced him to miss the final weeks of the domestic season.

Southgate has retthought his defensive plan, with Lewis Dunk and Marc Guehi preferred as John Stones' potential centre-back partners in Germany.

Jack Grealish

  • England Caps/Goals: 36/2
  • Club: Manchester City

Grealish has also struggled for fitness during Manchester City's Premier League title charge, and his place as another of Southgate's go-to guys was not enough to keep him in the squad.

The former Aston Villa winger was likely to be an option off the bench in Germany, if he had retained his spot, with Phil Foden and Cole Palmer ahead of him in Southgate's starting plans.

James Maddison

  • England Caps/Goals: 7/0
  • Club: Tottenham

Maddison received the news of his omission before some of the other players left out, and the Tottenham attacker gave a frank assessment of why he was not included.

A muted return from injury in the final stages of the 2023/24 season failed to ignite Spurs' top four push and he was overlooked in favor of more in-form alternatives.

Curtis Jones

  • England Caps/Goals: 0/0
  • Club: Liverpool

Jones played a vital role in England's triumph in the Under-21 Euros last summer and he was rewarded with a call up last month. With the Liverpool midfielder uncapped at senior level, it was a routine call for Southgate to make, with Crystal Palace's Adam Wharton preferred as cover for Declan Rice.

Jarell Quansah

  • England Caps/Goals: 0/0
  • Club: Liverpool

Jones' Liverpool teammate Jarrell Quansah was handed a regular first-team place alongside Virgil van Dijk in Jurgen Klopp's final weeks at Anfield.

He could be a regular once again under Arne Slot in the months ahead but he was overlooked in favor of Guehi and Dunk.

James Trafford

  • England Caps/Goals: 0/0
  • Club: Burnley

Burnley stopper Trafford missed a significant chunk of last season through injury and with UEFA rules only specifying for three goalkeepers to be included, Aaron Ramsdale and Dean Henderson are the understudies to Jordan Pickford.

Jarrad Branthwaite

  • England Caps/Goals: 1/0
  • Club: Everton

Branthwaite has been linked with a big-money move away from Everton this summer after an assured campaign at the heart of the Toffees' back line.

A cameo debut appearance against Bosnia failed to convince Southgate with the versatility of Joe Gomez giving him priority in the final 26.

Can England replace players on Euro 2024 roster?

Replacements could be made on the grounds of illness or injury up until June 13, the day before the tournament started.

Once Euro 2024 begins, teams must find solutions from within their 26-man squads.
