Houston acquired general allocation money in the deal, which sees Vancouver add a veteran right back after auditioning several players at the position in 2016.

Williams has made 179 MLS appearances since joining the Philadelphia Union in 2010. Sent to the Dynamo halfway through the 2015 season, he made 36 appearances (32 starts) with Houston.

"Sheanon is an athletic, solid defender with an attacking mind," Whitecaps coach Carl Robinson said in a news release. "Since joining the league back in 2010, Sheanon has been a regular starter and has a great reputation throughout the league as someone with outstanding character. We are excited to welcome him to our locker room."

Williams added: "I'm excited for the new opportunity. I can't wait to join up with the club and get things moving. We have a couple of months, and I'll be ready to get a good start to my time in Vancouver in the new year."
