The 2019 World Cup finalists the Netherlands begin their World Cup campaign against fellow European side and newcomers to the Women's World Cup, Portugal.

It is vitally important the Dutch begin their campaign with a win, as they are in the same group as tournament favourites and the team that defeated them in the 2019 final the USA, meaning they will be underdogs to top the group.

They are also without star striker Vivianne Miedema due to injury, significantly impacting the firepower up front for the Netherlands.

Their clash against Portugal won't be easy, whilst they aren't the strongest side in Europe, they have had strong results this year, defeating New Zealand 5-0 and fighting for a 0-0 draw with European champions England.

Netherlands vs Portugal lineups

There will be lots of pressure on Lineth Beerensteyn and Lieke Martens to fill the Miedema shaped attacking hole in the Dutch side, whilst Daphne van Domselaar will hope to have a similar impact on this World Cup side as she did in 2019 as an unheralded goalkeeper.

  • Netherlands projected starting lineup (4-2-3-1): van Domselaar (GK) — Casparij, van der Gragt, Janssen, Brugts — Egurrola, Roord — Pelova, van de Donk, Martens — Beerensteyn

Portugal will be led by inspirational captain Dolores Silva at the base of midfield, with Carolina Mendes and Jessica Silva providing the thrust in attack.

  • Portugal projected starting side (4-2-3-1): Pereira (GK) — Borges, Gomes, Costa, Amado — D. Silva, Pinto — Diana Silva, Nazareth, Norton — J. Silva

Netherlands vs Portugal betting odds

The Netherlands are expected to have too much quality for a Portugal side with no World Cup experience.

Whilst no Miedema means the Dutch attack is blunted, bookmakers aren't giving much chance on Portugal causing an upset
