Where to watch Mexico World Cup matches: El Tri games in Qatar on Telemundo, Fox in USA for 2022 tournament

Mexico take flight at the 2022 FIFA World Cup hoping to prove they belong on the global stage, and targeting a quarterfinal berth that has eluded them for decades.

El Tri have reached but not advanced past the Round of 16 for seven consecutive World Cup tournaments, and will hope that this year's competition in Qatar proves the year they get over the hump.

Led by Gerardo "Tata" Martino, Mexico will match up against Argentina, Poland, and Saudi Arabia in Group C. There's a good chance El Tri can advance past the group stage, but they'll need to be at their best in every match in a difficult group.

Once the group stage is complete, they'll hope to be part of the last 16 teams, where they can participate in the single-elimination knockout stage with the hope of pushing toward an all-time World Cup finish. To do so, they'll have to solve their recent attacking woes that have Tata Martino under pressure at the helm.

The 2022 World Cup will be televised in the United States in English by Fox Sports and in Spanish by Telemundo.

Telemundo and Universo

The 2022 FIFA World Cup, which kicks off Nov. 20 in Qatar, will be broadcast in the United States in Spanish primarily by Telemundo.

The only exception will come in the final round of group stage matches, when games are played simultaneously. For those matches, one will be pushed to Universo. All Spanish-language World Cup match broadcasts can be streamed on Peacock, which will air the first 12 matches of the tournament for free. Beginning Nov. 24, the remaining 52 will be available on Peacock Premium.

For Telemundo's Spanish-language coverage, the lead play-by-play broadcaster will be none other than the legendary Andres Cantor, covering his 12th World Cup. He will be partnered with former Mexican national team player Manuel Sol. Other play-by-play broadcasters for Telemundo coverage include Copan Alvarez, Sammy Sadovnik, and Jorge Calvo. They will all be partnered with analyst Eduardo Biscayart, who will be covering his fifth World Cup.

Telemundo's studio coverage will be manned chiefly by Miguel Gurwitz, Ana Jurka, Carlota Vizmanos, and Carlos Hermosillo, plus analysis throughout the tournament from the likes of Diego Forlan, Miguel Herrera, Tab Ramos, Carlos Tenorio, Claudio Borghi, Fernando Hierro, and a host of other experienced names.

Fox, FS1, and FS2

For English-language broadcasts, Fox will spread the matches across its family of channels, including FS1 and FS2. While most of the channel designations are set, Fox does have the ability to switch its assignments around, particularly for the final round of group stage fixtures depending on which matches carry the most importance for knockout stage places.

Fox's flagship play-by-play coverage will feature an A-Team of John Strong and Stu Holden. Other play-by-play broadcast teams include veteran JP Dellacamera paired with analyst Cobi Jones, Derek Rae paired with Aly Wagner, Ian Darke paired with Landon Donovan, and Warren Barton paired with Jacqui Oatley. Rules analysts Dr. Joe Machnik and Mark Clattenburg will be on hand to analyze refereeing decisions.

Fox's in-game studio coverage will be anchored by Rob Stone, while Kate Abdo hosts the show FIFA World Cup Tonight. Lead studio analysts include Alexi Lalas, Clint Dempsey, Carli Lloyd, and Maurice Edu. Other appearing studio analysts will include Eni Aluko, Kelly Smith, and former NFL receiver Chad Johnson. Sideline reporters will include Jenny Taft, Rodolfo Landeros, and Geoff Shreeves, while Tom Rinaldi will be on hand as a feature reporter.

Mexico World Cup fixtures, schedule

Mexico begin their 2022 World Cup campaign against Poland on Nov. 22 in Doha before a huge showdown with Argentina on Nov. 26 in Lusail. They end their Group C run against Saudi Arabia, also in Lusail, on Nov. 30.

El Tri have never faced Saudi Arabia before in World Cup action, with their last competitive meeting with Poland coming in the 1978 World Cup, where they lost 3-1.

However, their rivalry with Argentina runs much deeper: the Albiceleste knocked them out of the 2006 and 2010 tournaments at the last-16 stage.

Mexico route to World Cup final

Argentina are heavily fancied to top Group C in Qatar with Mexico likely to fight it out for second place with Robert Lewandowski's Poland.

However, they have strong pedigree for ensuring second spot in the group, after clinching it in the past four World Cups.

Round of 16

If Mexico do manage to top Group C, they will face the runners-up in Group D, likely to be either Denmark or Australia.

Second place in Group C pits them against the winners of Group D, which is likely to be defending champions France.

Quarterfinals

A place in the last eight would be a first for Mexico since they hosted the World Cup back in 1986.

As group winners they would likely meet the winners of Group A — potentially either Senegal or the Netherlands — with second place meaning a clash with England, if they top Group B.

Semifinals

Beyond a quarterfinal would be uncharted territory for Mexico and they could face Germany, Spain or Brazil as group winners and any side from four four, out of Group F and H.

Final

A run to the final could mean facing Argentina for the second time in the tournament with France a remaining option, if they win the group.

Mexico World Cup odds

Despite their issues on the world stage, Mexico have reached three of the past four CONCACAF Gold Cup finals, winning two, and losing out to the the United States in 2021.

Still, Tata Martino's group will be desperate to prove they belong not just in North America, but on the world stage.

Mexico have only advanced to the quarterfinals of a World Cup in the two tournaments they've hosted, 1970 and 1986. Otherwise, they've been stymied in the Round of 16, including in each of the past seven tournaments, unable to get over the hump in a modern World Cup format.
