When is USA vs Mexico CONCACAF Nations League semifinal? Rivalry for USMNT resumes in Las Vegas in June 2023 image

The U.S. national team and Mexico will resume their heated rivalry this summer as the two nations are slated to meet in the semifinals of the 2022/23 CONCACAF Nations League.

The match, which will be held in Las Vegas, will determine the team which advances to the final of the competition. There, they will play the winner of the other semifinal between Canada and Panama.

The USMNT are defending champions of the CONCACAF Nations League, having defeated Mexico in the match back in 2021. In that match, it was Christian Pulisic's extra-time penalty that sent the United States home with the silverware by a 3-2 win.

Mexico will be seeking revenge, having failed to beat the U.S. in each of their last four meetings. El Tri also have a point to prove to their own fans after suffering group stage elimination at the 2022 World Cup and backing into the Nations League semifinals on the heels of a 2-2 draw with Jamaica.

The U.S. coach will be BJ Callaghan, who was hired to replace the departing Anthony Hudson as interim manager. U.S. Soccer will likely tab a new permanent manager this summer, but that decision will not be made in time to affect this game.

The United States and Mexico will clash in the 2023 CONCACAF Nations League semifinals.

The Nations League does not have a draw for its semifinals and finals, instead seeding its final four participants by group stage finish. The U.S. finished with 10 points, which was the joint-most of anyone in group stage play, and the Americans held a superior goal differential compared to Panama. Mexico, meanwhile, finished with eight points, the lowest of any group winner.

That means the USMNT, as the highest seed, will play Mexico, as the lowest seed, while leaving Canada to play Panama in the other semifinal. Both semifinals and the final will take place at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas, Nevada.

It will be a game rife with storylines. Most notably, U.S. international Alejandro Zendejas could be involved in that match after turning down the Mexican federation to commit to the USA. On the flip side, Mexico right-back Julian Araujo could make his first-ever appearance against his country of birth (the USA).

USA vs Mexico history all-time

The match will be the second meeting between the United States and Mexico in 2023, and it will be their sixth meeting in the last three years.

Mexico have not beaten the USA since a 3-0 friendly win in July 2019, and they haven't won a competitive match against the United States since the 2019 Gold Cup final earlier that same year.

Since there must be a winner in June's Nations League match, it's possible that a penalty shootout could be required, should the match remain level after extra time. There has not been a penalty shootout between the USA and Mexico since the 1995 Copa America quarterfinals. The U.S. won the shootout 4-1 after a 0-0 draw.

Overall, across 65 all-time meetings throughout their rivalry, the USA has won 21 times, while Mexico has won 33 matches, with 11 draws.

Below is a list of the last 10 matches between the two teams (plus the two games that have yet to be played this year), in which each side has won four times plus two draws.
