The tension was ramped up again in the quarterfinals, with Bukayo Saka's goal forcing extra time against Switzerland before the match went to penalties. Despite England's mixed record in shootouts, Jordan Pickford's save from Manuel Akanji edged Southgate's men over the line.
Barely a few hours later the Netherlands made it through as well, as an own goal from Mert Muldur saw them come from behind to beat Turkey 2-1.
