When does Fantasy Premier League start? Date fans can pick their FPL teams for 23/24 season image

The start of the 2023/24 Premier League season is fast approaching and many fans are excited ahead of the new campaign.

Of course, the advent of a new season also means fans get a fresh crack at Fantasy Premier League (FPL). The game allows fans to build their own team and challenge friends and other supporters in mini-leagues.

With the 2023 summer transfer window still far from over, there are still expected to be a few twists and turns ahead of the new domestic season, but fans will be keeping an eye on potential bargains for their FPL teams.

The Sporting News looks at the key dates to keep in mind for the new Fantasy Premier League season.

When does 2023/24 FPL season start?

Of course, the FPL season lines up with the actual Premier League season. But FPL managers can begin to build their teams well in advance of the season kickoff when the game launches.

But the official FPL launch date has yet to be officially announced. This means that managers cannot yet build their teams until the game goes live.

The 2022/23 FPL launched on July 6, 2022 ahead of the 2022/23 Premier League season starting on August 5.

If that same four-week window is applied to the 2023/24 start date of Friday, August 11, this would point to FPL signups potentially starting as early as the week of Monday, July 10.

But FPL players can still get ahead of the game by checking the prices that are being released in July ahead of the start of the new FPL game.

Erling Haaland has been named as the most expensive player for the upcoming campaign, costing managers £14m. Teams consisting of 15 players can be built with a budget of £100m.

When does the 2023/24 Premier League season start?

Although the 2023/24 Premier League season is starting later than the 2022/23 campaign, it is still a fairly early kickoff.

The new Premier League season starts on Friday, August 11 and it will wrap by Sunday, May 19, allowing for nearly a month ahead of the 2024 European Championships which get underway on June 14, 2024.

Newly-promoted Burnley host champions Manchester City in the season opener at Turf Moor. Former Citizens captain Vincent Kompany leads his squad for the first time in the top-flight of English football.

FPL managers will have close to a month to create and tweak their teams, with more player transfers expected to take place prior to the first game of the Premier League season.

Key dates in the FPL calendar

As FPL managers know, it's important to keep an eye on the football calendar to ensure they get the most out of their teams.

Some teams will have 'double gameweeks' throughout the season — two matches in the same week — while others may not play on certain weekends. That will impact the squad selection strategies.

There will be a mid-season break between January 14-20, 2024 where only half of the 20 Premier League teams will play on either weekend.

FA Cup weekends will also mean that some teams may not play their scheduled Premier League fixtures, which could be the time to use a free hit or wildcard chip.
