What time is Liverpool vs Real Madrid in USA? UEFA Champions League final 2022 date, TV & streaming image

Since permanently moving to Saturdays beginning in 2010, the UEFA men's Champions League final has even more of a big-game feel to it.

The 2022 edition of the final on Saturday, May 28 will see Liverpool and Real Madrid face off in France with 90 minutes — and if necessary, extra time and penalties — separating one of them from another continental crown.

The move from midweek (Wednesdays) to the weekend has continued to help grow the audience for the Champions League final over the last 13 years, and it is estimated by UEFA that the 2021 final between Chelsea and Manchester City had a global reach of 275 million people, easily surpassing the Super Bowl.

With the final now falling on a Saturday or Sunday for most fans around the globe, it's clear that more people have more of an opportunity to set aside the time to take in one of the most anticipated events on the sports calendar. Below are the details for fans in the USA.

Is there extra time and penalties in Champions League final?

If Liverpool and Real Madrid are still level at the end of 90 minutes plus stoppage time, the match will head to 30 minutes of extra time split up into two 15-minute halves.

After the 30 minutes, if the scoreline is still deadlocked, the teams would need a penalty shootout to determine a winner. If the teams have scored the same number of penalties after the minimum five rounds, sudden death is introduced with every subsequent round.

The last Champions League final to be decided in a penalty shootout was Real Madrid's 2016 triumph over archrivals Atletico Madrid after a 1-1 draw through 120 minutes. Real Madrid made all five penalty kicks, while Atletico had one failed attempt and did not have a chance to kick a fifth.

Liverpool vs Real Madrid head to head

With their standing as two of European football's powers, Liverpool and Real Madrid have had several run-ins over the years.

The 2022 final is the third final showdown in this competition with each team claiming one trophy in the previous two title matches.

Where is the Champions League final?

The 2022 UEFA Champions League final will be held at Stade de France in Saint-Denis, France, just minutes north of downtown Paris.

This year's original host venue selection was Ataturk Olympic Stadium in Istanbul, Turkey. However, Champions League final venues underwent a shuffle due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The Ataturk Stadium was designated as the 2023 host, while Saint Petersburg, Russia, was meant to host the 2022 final.

But in February 2022, UEFA announced that due to the Russian invasion of Ukraine, Saint Petersburg would be stripped of hosting duties, opening the door for a move to the Stade de France in Saint-Denis.

The 2022 edition will be the first held in France since 2006, when Barcelona defeated Arsenal 2-1 in a memorable comeback victory. The Stade de France also hosted the 2000 Champions League final, where Real Madrid defeated fellow Spanish side Valencia.

The stadium has been the venue for several major events, including the 1998 FIFA World Cup final, which saw the French national team defeat Brazil 3-0 to win the title.
