Brazil are the next opponents for Argentina after the FIFA World Cup holders' perfect four-game start to their qualifying campaign for the 2026 finals came to a surprise end with a 2-0 defeat to Uruguay.

The Selecao suffered defeat on the same night, losing 2-1 in Colombia to extend their winless run to three matches. The five-time World Cup winners are now five points behind Argentina in the CONMEBOL group and could well be without Vinicius Jr – who was forced off against Colombia due to a knee injury – for this vital match.

Argentina are two points clear of Uruguay at the top of the table after conceding their first goals of the campaign at home to Marcelo Bielsa's side in a poor performance.

The Sporting News has the start time details for the game, as well as how to watch it across the world, kickoff times and the latest lineup news.

Brazil vs Argentina lineups, team news

The major news for Brazil is a knee injury which forced attacker Vinicius Jr out of the Colombia game during the first half and could keep the Real Madrid livewire out until 2024. Manchester United midfieler and Brazil captain Casemiro is out of the current squad with a hamstring injury. The Seleção are also without Neymar due to a long-term knee injury.

Ederson has pulled out of the squad injured, so Liverpool's Alisson is certain to start in goal. Arsenal striker Gabriel Jesus missed the Colombia game with a hamstring problem.

Brazil lineup (4-3-3, right to left): Alisson (GK) — Emerson, Marquinhos, Gabriel, Lodi — Guimaraes, Rodrygo, D. Luiz — Raphinha, Endrick, Joao Pedro

Manchester United winger Alejandro Garnacho didn't make the Argentina squad, which is a sign of how much strength in depth manager Lionel Scaloni can call upon in his squad.

Lionel Messi will start in a free role, with the likes of Rodrigo de Paul and Enzo Fernandez tasked with covering the ground behind him.

Argentina projected lineup (4-3-3, right to left): Martinez (GK) — Montiel, Romero, Pezzella, Tagliafico — Mac Allister, Fernandez, De Paul — Messi, Alvarez, Gonzalez.

Brazil vs Argentina prediction, odds

Brazil last lost a competitive home fixture in 1975, although they were beaten in Brazil by Argentina during the 2021 Copa America and by Germany and the Netherlands during the 2014 FIFA World Cup.

They are favourites against Argentina but could be hampered by Vinicius Jr becoming their latest attacking absentee. A low-scoring draw could be on the cards between teams who have netted a total of nine goals across their last eight matches combined.

Prediction: Brazil 1-1 Argentina
