What inspired Wolverhampton Wanderers’ resurgence - Benik Afobe image

Benik Afobe has explained the inspiration behind Wolverhampton Wanderers’ resurgence, following their recent poor form.

Although they won Leeds United after a three-game winless run, they suffered a 4-1 defeat to Aston Villa. The loss, obviously threatened their lead on the English Championship table as second-placed Cardiff City soon closed the gap to six points.

And the 25-year-old has revealed that a meeting after Villa thumping stirred the team back to winning ways, with back-to-back victories over Reading and Burton Albion.

“We had a meeting last Sunday as a team, the manager spoke to us and we knew what we had to do, it’s as simple as that,” Afobe told Express & Star.

“It was a very honest meeting, one of the best things about this manager is he doesn’t hide things from us.

“He tells us what he feels and thinks – it’s never in a vicious or angry way – he’s a very calm guy.

“He told us what we needed to do as a team. It’s been about the shape and everything we do here is about the team.

“Football’s a funny old thing. Against Villa, we were very down, the players, the fans, the staff. Everyone associated with Wolverhampton was a bit nervous, I’m not going to lie.

“We had to win the next two games which we’ve done now.

“We’re going to have a good break and go again against Middlesbrough.”

Although Afobe struggled for playing time on his return to the Molineux Stadium after his January loan move from Bournemouth, the former Bolton Wanderers player has now scored four goals in his last four appearances and he is delighted with the new lease of life.

“When you score, your team wins and you’re top of the league, you’re in dreamland.

“The more I’ve been training with the boys, I’m adapting to the way they play and they’re adapting to the way I play.

“It was always going to be hard to come in in January. Ideally, I would have wanted to hit the ground running straight away but it’s a different team to when I was here before.

“I’m enjoying my football.”
