Western New York fell behind in the first half and in extra time of the NWSL final but both times found an equalizer and took the NWSL title on penalties.

Flash goalkeeper Sabrina D’Angelo was named the match's MVP after making three stops on the Washington Spirit in a shootout that her side won, 3-2, after a 2-2 draw through 120 minutes.

The Flash were the fourth and final team to qualify for the NWSL playoffs but topped the NWSL Shield-winning Portland Thorns in extra time in the semifinal. The team becomes the league's third champion after the Thorns won the inaugural crown in 2013 and FC Kansas City won back-to-back titles in 2014 and 2015.
