LONDON STADIUM — Second-half goals from Jeremy Doku, Bernardo Silva and Erling Haaland saw reigning Premier League champions Manchester City come from behind to claim a 3-1 win at West Ham United.

Haaland went into the game at London Stadium, where he netted twice on his Premier League debut last season, with six in four league games this term but scuffed wide at the back post on the end of Josko Gvardiol's drilled 15th-minute cross.

James Ward-Prowse, who has been excellent since swapping Southampton for east London last month, showed him how it was done in the 36th minute when he stooped to head home Vladimir Coufal's cross.

Doku was partly culpable for that goal but City's recent addition was a livewire presence on the left wing and his low 43rd-minute cross was stabbed towards goal from a tight angle by Haaland, only for Nayef Aguerd to mop up on the line.

The Belgium international decided to go it alone in the first minute of the second half, persuading Coufal to backpedal before caressing a right-footed shot beyond Alphonse Areola into the far corner for his first City goal.

Julian Alvarez then rattled the post from a free-kick and Areola excelled to keep out a Haaland volley from Rodri’s chipped pass.

Ederson's save after the hour from Kurt Zouma was a pivotal moment. His opposite number was helpless when Nayef Aguerd misjudged Alvarez’s lofted ball and Silva applied the finish 14 minutes from time.

Areola claimed another victory in his mini-battle with Haaland when he denied the Norwegian superstar from Kyle Walker's cross but City's top scorer had the final word from Silva's measured pass.

Doku gives Guardiola a new/old dimension

During Pep Guardiola’s first season at City, which ended trophyless, a couple of games at London Stadium gave an indication of the destructive force his team would become. A 5-0 FA Cup third-round win was followed by a 4-0 Premier League triumph in east London. The electrifying wing play of Leroy Sane and Raheem Sterling was to the fore.

Over recent years, Guardiola has gone in a different direction with his wide attackers, opting for more controlling presences like Bernardo Silva and Jack Grealish. Sane and Sterling now play for Bayern Munich and Chelsea, respectively. To this end, the City boss went back to the future on Saturday with his £55.5 million signing from Rennes.

Doku beat Coufal early on and the West Ham right-back battled gamely against a high risk of twisted blood from that point on. As the hosts played with discipline and resolve behind the ball, the livewire Doku was always available to try and scatter their shape. He created three chances and took his goal with aplomb.

Ward-Prowse makes his point to England boss Southgate

Ward-Prowse has played 11 times for his country but there was no place for him in the squad for England’s recent games against Ukraine and Scotland, with Jordan Henderson and Kalvin Phillips selected despite respectively moving to the Saudi Pro League and not really playing much football at all. Phillips was an unused City substitute once again here.

Against City, Ward-Prowse once again showed himself to be the adaptable performer who became familiar during seasons of quiet excellence at Southampton. His viciously swinging corners put the champions on their heels after a typically authoritative start, although his raiding runs forward that culminated in his goal underlined the fact he is far more than a dead-ball specialist.

England are hardly over-stocked in terms of central midfield options and, on this evidence, it would be foolish for Southgate not to have Ward-Prowse in his Euro 2024 plans.

Man City squad depth a looming issue for Guardiola

As Doku, Alvarez, Haaland, Silva and Phil Foden poked and prodded West Ham immediately after the equaliser, it was hard to say this is a City team with a lack of attacking threat. Indeed, the contrary is true. But when Guardiola decided he needed fresh legs, Foden made way for Matheus Nunes. The debutant is a fine footballer but a man with nine senior goals in his career.

Guardiola’s ability to spot telling in-game switches and having players intelligent enough to carry them out means City do not need a boatload of players. After half-time at London Stadium, he detailed Silva and Foden to alternate between the right wing and the right inside forward positions and West Ham never got a grip of it.

However, a bench of eight featuring two goalkeepers and Nunes as the man to come on and chase the winner felt a little jarring. They’ll be better resourced once Grealish and long-term absentee Kevin De Bruyne come back from injury but the sense remains that this is a squad a touch light on numbers.

West Ham vs Man City live updates, highlights, and commentary

Fulltime: They had to work for it but in the end that was an authoritative win from Manchester City. James Ward-Prowse gave West Ham the lead at the break but Jeremy Doku turned the game on its head with an excellent solo goal in the first minute of the second period. City needed Ederson to make a fabulous save to deny Kurt Zouma when the score was 1-1 and Bernardo Silva and Erling Haaland - misfiring until that point - got them over the line.

City have won five out of five in superb start to their bid for four league titles in a row. They haven't started this well since Guardiola's first season in charge. They won nothing in 2016/17, so I guess there is hope for everyone else... Thanks for joining us.

90th minute+3: Haaland comes off and laps up the applause from the travelling supporters. Teenager Rico Lewis is on in his place. Fellow academy product Oscar Bobb comes on for Silva, while Nathan Ake is a like-for-like swap for Gvardiol.

90th minute: There will be six additional minutes. The eternal optimists among the remaining West Ham faithful let out a cheer

86th minute: GOOOOAAAAALLLLL!!!!!! Erling Haaland!!!!

Of course, Haaland isn't most people. He gets his goal and City break clinically. Silva adds an assist to his goal as he tees up Haaland to finally dispatch one beyond Areola. Plenty of the home fans start to head for the exits.

82nd minute: Sometimes it's not your day, even if you're Erling Haaland. Walker sticks on the afterburners and crosses towards his hulking No. 9, only for Areola to come out on top in their personal duel again.

76th minuteGOOOOAAAAALLLLL!!!!!! Bernardo Silva!!!!!

City might have grabbed the points. Nunes is involved, raiding towards the West Ham byline inside the box. The attack comes back to Silva, who pops it off to Alvarez and scampers into the box. Aguerd, who has been excellent today, misjudges his jump, the ball skims over his head and Silva prods it beyond Areola. Haaland resists the urge to apply a final touch because he wasn't sure whether he was onside.

74th minute: Guardiola was keen on signing Paqueta, who pirouettes and does some lovely drag backs. Guardiola ended up signing Nunes, who ploughs into the exhibitionist Brazilian to concede  free-kick.

73rd minute: Doku again, stabs a low cross towards Haaland but West Ham clear.

67th minute: Double West Ham change as Kudus comes on for Antonio to make his home debut and Benrahma replaces Edson Alvarez. There's a City debut for Nunes, on in place of Foden. That feels like an odd one from Guardiola.

65th minute: Doku spins away from Coufal and looks to break. The West Ham full-back had quite enough of all this and brings him down agriculturally. We should come back for a booking. The attack continues and Areola makes his latest smart save from Gvardiol.

64th minute: A free-kick on the left wing 40 yards out wouldn't normally be dangerous but Ward-Prowse makes it so. Walker clears.

61st minute: Brilliant save from Ederson! Ward-Prowse is on the money once again, Zouma gets up and it looks for all the world a goal. But City's goalkeeper is at full stretch and thrusts out his left arm to push the ball to safety.

60th minute: They've left the back door unlocked though an here Emerson facing up to Ederson. Akanji slides into touch the ball behind with a vital last-ditch challenge.

59th minute: Haaland gets up with Aguerd to meet a raking Silva cross. Areola holds on. City knocking on the door fairly loudly now.

58th minute: Doku runs at West Ham. Zouma gets a block in. This game in microcosm. Corner to City. They make a hash of a short one.

57th minute: Antonio in a foot race with Dias and the West Ham man is winning out! In doing so, his touch is a little heavy though and Ederson is out to mop up.

54th minute: City running through the repertoire a bit now. Rodri strides regally forward and chips a delicate pass towards Haaland. The striker connects with one of his kung-fu volleys but Areola is equal to it and saves excellently.

53rd minuteOff the post! Julian Alvarez has had a fairly quiet game but that's a sumptuous free-kick. Areola had no chance and was grateful to see it bounce to safety off the inside of his left post.

49th minute: City have blood in their nostrils. Areola pushes away a driven Foden cross and Gvardiol clatters the rebound over from outside the box. With the space and time and the way the ball sat up, he really should have hit the target.

46th minuteGOOOOAAAAALLLLLL!!!!!!!! Jeremy Doku!!!!

Doku has Coufal backpedalling once again — someone nip to the velodrome over the road and fetch him  a bike — and makes it count this time, caressing a finish into the far corner for a deserved first City goal.

46th minute: We're back underway and on Manchester City player in particular certainly is...

Halftime: Whistles around the London Stadium as a City attack is allowed to run its course. Foden finally has a shot blocked and Andrew Madley blows his whistle. The champions will wonder quite how they've managed to go in behind here, especially considering those two Haaland chances. But in between those moments, West Ham played with increased composure and their shuttling midfield runners caused City some problems. That was where the goal came from, with Ward-Prowse capping a fine half.

45th minute+2: Frustration from Gvardiol, who piles into Bowen late and is rightly booked.

45th minute+1: In-swinger from Foden and Areola paws it behind for another, which is taken quickly to Doku before West Ham boot clear again. A foul throw from Bernardo Silva kills City's momentum.

45th minute: Doku is the spark once more as Foden has a shot blocked behind. The corner will begin two minutes of stoppage time.

43rd minuteOff the line! Foden does well to keep a City attack alive. It's worked over to Doku, who produces more twinkle-toed magic to deliver a low cross. The angle is against Haaland, who stabs at a finish and Aguerd mops up on his goalline.

38th minute: Foden wins a free-kick off Ward-Prowse. Edson Alvarez says something the referee doesn't particularly like and is booked. It comes to nought.

36th minuteGOOOOAAAAALLLLLL!!!!!!!! James Ward-Prowse!!!!

And there's the goal! Coufal gets forward, with Doku'sa covering back leaving a little to be desired. Ward-Prowse has been getting forward to join attacks frequently and he's there with a stooping header in loads of room to convert the right-back's cross.

35th minute: West Ham have definitely grown into this game. They're enjoying more of the ball. Ward-Prowse has a deflected effort held by Ederson.

32nd minute: A break in play after a coming together between Dias and Antonio allows the players to take on fluid. Guardiola is out busily dispensing instructions, not entirely like a man who's just had back surgery.

30th minute: Bowen shimmies in from the right and delivered a teasing ball across the City box. For reasons best known to himself, Antonio is loitering out on the left wing and there's no one to finish.

28th minute: Zouma is really getting through some work back there, first thwarting an attempted pass through by Alvarez to Haaland before blocking a shot from the Norwegian superstar. Then Areola holds onto a Rodri long-ranger.

27th minute: Doku wins another City corner that Foden blooters straight out of play. James Ward-Prowse would never...

25th minute: Antonio fancies this battle with Akanji but Silva gets back to help out this time and City avoid conceding the corner.

22nd minute: Antonio has a run at Akanji. The Swiss defender stands firm at the expense of corner. Time for another Ward-Prowse special.... Ederson gets there first.

21st minute: Lovely touch from Foden on the edge of the D. It opens up room to shoot and Zouma gets a vital toe on a low drive to send it the right side of the post from a West Ham perspective. This corner is less eventful.

19th minute: Doku cuts in for a shot of his own but it's a tame right-footed effort straight at Areola.

17th minute: Now West Ham almost lead! Ward-Prowse whips in one of his devilish curling corners, Soucek wins the near-post flick and Aguerd can't divert it into the net. Looking at the replays, Ward-Prowse's corner as swerving so much that Soucek might have actually stopped it from going in!

15th minuteHorror miss from Erling Haaland! Goodness me, you'd put your mortgage on him scoring that. Doku, who has been very bright early on, feed Gvardiol. The left-back drills one across the box, it might have been a mishit shot but Haaland is free with the goal gaping at the far post and somehow scuffs wide.

14th minute: Loose pass from Gvardiol and Coufal romps into the City half. Carless from Antonio, though, who see Silva more or less nip under his armpit to pinch the ball.

11th minute: City are already into an ominous rhythm but a little sign of encouragement as Foden coughs up possession and is forced to foul Ward-Prowse. It's so far inside the Hammers half that there's no booking but the hosts should get opportunities to break if they bide their time.

7th minuteOh my word, how has that not gone in?!?! Pinball and chaos in the West Ham area as Areola saves Rodri's header from Foden's corner. Foden puts it back towards the Spain international who has one shot blocked and another flicked goalwards by Haaland. Soucek clears that off the line and then Areola tips over from Dias's follow-up header. Get all that? Good!

6th minute: Doku gets Coufal isolated and darts around him. West Ham can't let that happen too often. Zouma heads behind.

4th minute: A nice bit of controlled possession for West Ham in City territory is disturbed as Gvardiol introduces himself to Bowen with a meaty tackle. The visitors get up the other end, Haaland looks to play Foden in and Coufal slides it behind for the first corner of the game.

2nd minute: Foden is playing tucked in off the right-hand side, with Walker holding the width out there. The two combine and West Ham scramble away Foden's chipped cross that was aimed towards Haaland.

1st minute: Julian Alvarez gets us underway. West Ham in their traditional claret and blue, City in their white away shirt with claret shorts. Good day for fans of claret.

4 mins to kickoff: Here come the teams. Di Canio just led the stadium in a chorus of West Ham's "I'm Forever Blowing Bubbles" anthem and it gets its traditional airing as Kyle Walker and Kurt Zouma lead the sides out.

10 mins to kickoff: Former West Ham crowd favourite Paolo Di Canio is just about to be presented to his adoring public before we get underway, while there will also be a moment's silence to commemorate the victims of the the Moroccan earthquake.

30 mins to kickoff: City's record at the London Stadium is an excellent one. They've never lost here but West Ham have tightened things up over recent years. In Guardiola's mixed first season in charge in 2016/17, his team won 5-0 in the FA Cup and 4-0 in the Premier League in the space of a month. Two of the three most recent editions of the fixture ended in draws, with City battling back from 1-0 and 2-0 down respectively to earn a point. On the opening day of last season, Erling Haaland proved to be the difference on his Premier League debut.

LiveScore (Twitter)

50 mins to kickoff: This is the West Ham team. James Ward-Prowse, Edson Alvarez and Tomas Soucek make up a robust-looking midfield three who will have to get through plenty of work. Kudus will have to make his home debut from the bench.

1 hour to kickoff: The teams are in. Recent signings Josko Gvardiola and Jeremy Doku start for City and Bernardo Silva returns to the start XI. Nunes is among a bench of only eight, including two goalkeepers. Kovacic, John Stones, Jack Grealish and Kevin De Bruyne are all injured.

1 hr 20 mins to kickoff: Team news will be confirmed in about 20 minutes and there could be a couple of full debuts. Mohammed Kudus was a late substitute in West Ham 2-1 win at Luton after joining from Ajax. City signed Matheu Nunes from Wolves on deadline day and an injury to Mateo Kovacic might put him in line for a start.

1 hr 40 mins to kickoff: It's absolutely scorching down in east London today — something the Sporting News did not take into account in terms of attire when leaving slate-grey northern England this morning. Both teams will undoubtedly be far better prepared for the conditions, but it doesn't feel like an ideal day to be running around after Manchester City as they rack up in excess of 70% of possession. David Moyes' bench will be very important to him if West Ham are to get a result.

2 hours to kickoff: Hello and welcome to the Sporting News' live coverage of West Ham vs. Manchester City in the Premier League.

West Ham vs Man City lineups, team news

David Moyes has no major injury concerns, Vladimir Coufal coming through a late fitness test to start at right-back. Mohammed Kudus will have to make his home debut from the bench after joining from Ajax.

City remain without Jack Grealish (knee) and John Stones (muscular) after the England duo sat out the recent international break. Mateo Kovacic returned from duty with Croatia carrying a minor injury and will also miss out, further stretching City in midfielder where Kevin De Bruyne (hamstring) is a long-term absentee.

Man City lineup (4-2-3-1, right to left): Ederson (GK) — Walker, Akanji, Dias, Gvardiol — Rodri, Silva — Foden, Alvarez, Doku — Haaland
