They may not have their first-team players available for this one, but when the USA and Mexico meet in a friendly on Wednesday night in Glendale, Ariz., the bite and intensity of the rivalry will be felt just the same.
It's the first meeting between the longtime foes in 2023, and there is sure to be another one in the semifinals of the CONCACAF Nations League in June. The two nations could also face off in the 2023 Gold Cup later in the summer.
With this April friendly falling outside an official FIFA international window, rosters for both teams consist mainly of domestic-based players who were released for national team duty. Only two players are based in Europe and they are both right-backs: USA's Sergino Dest (AC Milan) and Mexico's Julian Araujo (Barcelona reserves).
It's a big opportunity for players on the fringes of both national teams: domestic-based veterans and a collection of younger talents who will all be hoping to impress.
