The United States got their inaugural W Gold Cup journey off on the right foot by trouncing the Dominican Republic 5-0 to begin group stage play.
Now, the USWNT turn their sights to more established competition as they meet Argentina with a chance to secure a spot in the knockout round. The match comes on an unusually quick turnaround of just three days, which some teams are using to mirror this summer's Olympics which is also an abnormally condensed competition.
Olivia Moultrie led a young and inexperienced U.S. lineup to victory by bagging a brace in her first international start, while Alex Morgan came off the bench to score her first international goal in over a year by hitting from the spot to round out the lopsided scoreline.
Argentina, coming in at 31st in the world by the official FIFA rankings, are guest participants in this inaugural W Gold Cup along with Brazil, Colombia, and Paraguay. The Albiceleste drew 0-0 with Mexico in their opening match.

USA vs Argentina lineups & team news
Twila Kilgore experimented with a 3-4-3 lineup against China in December, but switched back to a 4-3-3 in the opener against the Dominican Republic. Kilgore deployed a largely second-choice lineup in the opener against their weakest group opponent, but against the tougher two sides in the group, the regulars will likely see time.
Two players from the Dominican Republic win who could earn more time could be Midge Purce and Olivia Moultrie, as both were extremely bright up front. The U.S. had little defending to do in the match, but 2023 NWSL Rookie of the Year Jenna Nighswonger also brought positivity to the back line.
Injuries have affected this roster. Alana Cook was replaced in the squad by the experienced Becky Sauerbrunn, while potential breakout winger Mia Fishel suffered a gutting ACL tear in USWNT training the day before the tournament began. Star striker Alex Morgan was not originally called into the team for this tournament, but she has now been given the nod as Fishel's replacement.
USA projected starting lineup (4-3-3): Naeher (GK) — Fox, Nighswonger, Girma, Dunn — Horan, Sonnett, Lavelle — Rodman, Morgan, Smith.
While much of the Argentina roster hails from domestic-based clubs, including goalkeeper and captain Vanina Correa, there is some European and USA-based talent. Talented defender Sophia Braun plays for the Kansas City Current, joining this offseason from Mexican club Leon after a four-year career playing collegiately for Gonzaga. Catalina Roggerone is a young defender playing collegiately for Cal State Bakersfield, while Romina Nunez and Daiana Falfan are signed with clubs in Spain's top flight.
Veteran striker Mariana Larroquette plays in the NWSL for the Orlando Pride, holding 79 international caps and 22 career goals. Her strike partner Yamila Rodriguez plays her club ball in Brazil for giants Palmeiras.
They saw an injury rule key midfielder Lorena Benitez out of contention, replaced on the roster by playmaker Marianela Szymanowski. Meanwhile, veterans Florencia Bonsegundo and Estefania Banini both retired from international duty after the 2023 Women's World Cup.
Argentina projected starting lineup (4-4-2): Oliveros (GK) — J. Cruz, Braun, Mayorga, Stabile — R. Nunez, Preininger, Ares, Singarella — Y. Rodriguez, Larroquette.
