The 31-year-old passed Pele for the top spot on Brazil's career goal-scoring charts with his 78th and 79th international goals in a 5-1 demolition of South American minnows Bolivia on Friday. With that milestone now secured, Neymar is chasing the global all-time assists record, held by Landon Donovan of the United States, a mark of which he is just two shy.
With three points in their qualification opener, Brazil already hold one foot in the 2026 World Cup thanks to FIFA's expansion of the tournament field. Thus, individual records will carry the narrative for much of their qualifying journey this cycle and beyond.
Peru began their 2026 cycle with a drab 0-0 draw on the road at Paraguay, out-shot 19-5 as they simply held on for dear life after falling to 10 men just before halftime. After qualifying for the 2022 World Cup via the intercontinental playoff, the road point is valuable, but fans will be hoping for more signs of life to avoid such a narrow way in this time around.

After being sent off for a second booking just before halftime of their qualifying opener last week, Luis Advincula is suspended for this game, meaning Aldo Corzo of domestic side Universitario de Deportes will step in at right-back.
Changes are made up front by head coach Juan Reynoso, moving to a 4-3-3, but captain Paolo Guerrero will stay at striker to earn his 11th cap. Wingers Andy Polo and Andre Carrillo keep their places, which means 21-year-old playmaker Jostin Alarcon will have to wait to earn his first international cap.
Orlando City goalkeeper Pedro Gallese – whose six saves in the draw with Paraguay secured a point – will likely continue between the posts.
