Following a comprehensive 2-0 victory over Ghana, the Mexican national team will see a significant step up in competition as they meet European power Germany in a friendly from Philadelphia on Tuesday.

El Tri locked Ghana down throughout the 90 minutes over the weekend, preventing their African opponents from producing a single shot on target all match. With that defensive structure untouched, they saw second-half goals from "Chucky" Lozano and Uriel Antuna lead the way to victory.

Germany dismantled the United States on Saturday in a wide-open match from Hartford, also seeing two second-half goals prove the difference. Christian Pulisic's outstanding strike was undone by numerous U.S. defensive mistakes, and El Tri will be wise to heed that warning ahead of this match.

While the opposition is stout, this game provides a great litmus test for Mexico to show they are on the mend following a disappointing World Cup which rose significant concerns about the direction the national team is headed.

Mexico vs Germany starting lineups & team news

Jaime Lozano has the majority of his key stars available for this game, with captain Guillermo Ochoa included, alongside Premier League duo Raul Jimenez and Edson Alvarez. Star winger Hirving Lozano, newly at PSV this season, is finally healthy after missing since March with a knee injury.

Veteran pair Hector Moreno and Hector Herrera have been left out of this camp as the head coach looks to move in a more youthful direction. That is still a big call, as Herrera has played well with the Houston Dynamo this season.

Raul Jimenez has still yet to prove he can get back to his top form, locked down for the most part against Ghana, and that has seen Santiago Gimenez start against a top international side.

Mexico starting lineup (4-3-3): Ochoa (GK) — J. Sanchez, Montes, J. Vazquez, Gallardo — E. Sanchez, E. Alvarez, Romo — Lozano, Gimenez, Antuna.

Julian Nagelsmann has made just two changes from the 3-1 victory over the USMNT, swapping out Mats Hummels for Niklas Sule at the back, and inserting Thomas Muller up front for Niclas Fullkrug.

Critical utility midfielder Josh Kimmich missed the U.S. game with an illness, and has departed national team camp early to return to Bayern Munich hoping to make a recovery before club action restarts. Injuries for Nagelsmann to work around include Serge Gnabry who is out with a broken arm, and Timo Werner who has been touch and go at RB Leipzig with a back problem.

Germany starting lineup (4-2-3-1): Ter Stegen (GK) — Tah, Rudiger, Sule, Gosens — Gross, Gundogan — Sane, Musiala, Wirtz — Muller.
