The Portland Timbers won't be around to defend their MLS Cup title this fall.
Western Conference playoff pairings
Needing a victory to guarantee a playoff berth, the Timbers fell behind against the Vancouver Whitecaps on a pair of first-half Giles Barnes goals — including an astonishing opener — before seeing Pedro Morales and Nicolas Mezquida score after the break en route to a 4-1 win.
Connecting with a Fraser Aird cross from the right flank, Barnes fired a rocket past Jake Gleeson to give Vancouver a 13th-minute lead.

And Barnes put the Timbers under further pressure in the 32nd minute, getting down the left flank and tucking a low shot inside the far post.

That advantage was extended to three goals as Morales scored a beauty in the 54th minute, with Mezquida then making it 4-0 a minute later.

Diego Valeri converted a 72nd-minute penalty for the Timbers, but it was too little, too late, as the Timbers finish seventh in the West.
