In the third round of the EFL Cup, Tottenham Hotspur will visit Championship team Coventry City on Wednesday night, hoping to bounce back from a crushing loss over the weekend.

Coventry returned from their two-week break with a respectable point at the home of in-form Watford in the Championship on Saturday afternoon, although the visitors may have been better off with all three points after a lackluster one-goal loss to Norwich City at the CBS Arena before the international break.

On Sunday afternoon, Spurs suffered the terrible blow of a derby defeat at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium for the third straight game against their North London rivals. Mikel Arteta's team won all three Premier League points thanks to a header from Arsenal center-back Gabriel in the second half.

Coventry City vs. Tottenham predicted lineups, team news

Coventry City are feeling the strain from Ben Sheaf’s absence, as the midfielder battles a leg injury with hopes of returning by the end of the month. The lack of midfield options was evident in their match at Watford, where they suffered another setback as Joel Latibeaudiere had to leave the game in the second half with a knock.

Meanwhile, Tatsuhiro Sakamoto’s tough 2024 continues, with the Japanese winger sidelined until October due to an ankle injury, further depleting the Sky Blues' options.

Coventry City predicted XI (4-5-1, right to left): Wilson (GK) —  Van Ewijk, Binks, Thomas, Bidwell — Allen, Eccles, Mason-Clark, Rudoni, Wright — Simms.

Injured: None
Suspended: None

Tottenham will still be without forward Richarlison, as the Brazilian remains sidelined with a muscle injury. In his absence, summer signing Dominic Solanke, who made his home debut on Sunday, is likely to continue leading the Spurs attack.

Yves Bissouma is doubtful for the trip to the CBS Arena, giving midfielders Pape Sarr and Lucas Bergvall a strong chance to feature in the starting lineup.

After coming off the bench during the North London derby loss, Wilson Odobert and Timo Werner could get the nod to start on Wednesday night, aiming to trouble Coventry’s defense from the outset.

Tottenham predicted XI (4-3-3, right to left): Forster (GK) — Porro, Romero, Dragusin, Davies — Gray, Sarr, Kulusevski — Werner, Odobert, Solanke.

Injured: Richarlison, Yves Bissouma
Suspended: None

Coventry City vs. Tottenham Prediction

Following last season's early exit from the EFL Cup, Tottenham will be eager to edge closer to ending their long silverware drought.

While Coventry have proven they can hold their own against Premier League sides in recent cup ties, we don’t foresee Wednesday night being one for the Sky Blues to remember.
