Looking to give chase atop the Eastern Conference with just nine matches to go in the MLS regular season, the Columbus Crew host a desperate Seattle Sounders in Ohio on Saturday.
Amidst a light MLS weekend slate, the Crew are looking to make up ground on Inter Miami for not just the Eastern Conference title but also the overall Supporters' Shield. The Herons hold a 10-point advantage, but have played two more matches than the Crew coming into the weekend.
Since losing to FC Cincinnati on May 11, meanwhile, the Crew have dropped points in just three total matches. Hoping to spark a defense of last year's MLS Cup title, they have outscored opponents 39-11 in that span, with five clean sheets. They will be missing defender Malte Amundsen for this match due to yellow card accumulation.
The Sounders, meanwhile, are right on the playoff cut line and must maintain their current standing if they wish to reach the postseason. After a horrid early start to the campaign amidst fixture congestion that came with a CONCACAF Champions Cup run, they have recovered well, buoyed by a seven-game stretch through June and July where they dropped points in only one league match.
Yet two losses in their last three, including a 1-0 defeat to rivals Portland, have left the Sounders back in a perilous position, needing points wherever they can find them.
