In all likelihood, only one of FIFA No. 7 Canada and No. 13 Australia can advance to the knockout round, while one will almost surely be eliminated as they meet in their Group B finale at the 2023 Women's World Cup.

Canada hold the upper hand, needing just a draw to secure advancement to the knockout round, but such a result would leave them only able to win the group should Nigeria lose to already eliminated Republic of Ireland.

Co-hosts Australia, meanwhile, almost surely need a win to advance. There is a very specific scenario in which they could make it through with a draw, but it would require a Nigeria defeat in such a manner that sees Australia snatch the tiebreakers.

Thus, it all rides on this match as the two favoured sides in the four-team group are suddenly staring down the gun barrel of an early exit from the latest FIFA showcase tournament. Such a result would be a bitter pill to swallow for two sides that have visions of a knockout stage run given their stature and status in the women's game.

Canada vs Australia projected lineups & team news

Midfielder Jessie Fleming is fit and back in a starting role, playing the full 90 minutes against Republic of Ireland last time out after missing their World Cup opener. However, forward Janine Beckie is not with the World Cup squad after tearing her ACL in the spring.

While head coach Bev Priestman resisted starting Cloe Lacasse last time out after a solid performance off the bench against Nigeria, she could be tempted to do so here after Jordyn Huitema and Adrianna Leon sprinted their tails off in the first two matches. Leon came off after an hour against Ireland, but Huitema has given two breathless 90 minute performances, and a switch could keep the legs fresh. Evelyne Viens started last match up front but was yanked at halftime and could also be a candidate to be withdrawn.

The world's leading international goal scorer, Christine Sinclair, didn't start against Ireland, and has been extremely wasteful in front of goal. At 40 years old, it's hard to see her starting here, instead potentially used as a late spark if needed.

Both Canada's centre-backs, Kadeisha Buchanan and Vanessa Gilles, picked up yellow cards and would be suspended for a potential Round of 16 match should Les Rouges advance. Buchanan was withdrawn at halftime of the Ireland game, and depending on how Priestman sees this game, the speedy Sheilna Zadorsky could be deployed.

Canada projected starting lineup (4-3-3): Sheridan (GK) — Riviere, Zadorsky, Gilles, Lawrence — Quinn, Fleming, Grosso — Leon, Lacasse, Huitema.

The status of San Kerr has everyone talking, but in truth, it's hard to see her passing fit to start here. The Australia coaching staff has been tight-lipped as ever regarding her health, but when they have discussed it, they do not sound overtly optimistic, even if they only ruled her out for the first two matches. If she does start, the extent of her health will remain a talking point throughout the match.

Head coach Thomas Gustavsson made just one change between Australia's first two matches, replacing the ineffective Mary Fowler with Emily van Egmond up front, and the latter is likely to stick in the coming XI after netting a goal against Nigeria. An unchanged side is likely despite the recent defeat.

Caitlin Foord is the only Aussie facing suspension with a booking in this or future matches as it currently stands.

Australia projected starting lineup (4-4-2): Arnold (GK) — Carpenter, Hunt, Kennedy, Catley — Raso, Gorry, Cooney-Cross, Vine — Foord, van Egmond.

Canada vs Australia betting odds & lines

Neither team has looked particularly impressive through their first two group matches, but it's Canada who have met adversity head on and come out with four points. Despite injuries to Janine Beckie and Jessie Fleming, and sometimes failing to pass the eye test, Canada have managed to secure four points.

Yet somehow, the Aussies are significant favorites here, which seems a head-scratcher.

The North American side has leaned on its world-class defense, conceding just a single goal through two matches, which came on a stunner from Katie McCabe who struck a Goal of the Tournament nominee, scoring directly from a corner. Otherwise, they've held it locked down at the back, holding Nigeria to one shot on target and preventing Ireland from having too many clear-cut opportunities.
