A thrilling South American showdown awaits at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas this Saturday as Uruguay faces Brazil in the Copa America 2024 quarterfinals. The winner will advance to the semifinals to play against either Colombia or Panama.

Uruguay have been outstanding in the tournament, winning all three group games with an impressive 9-1 aggregate score. They started with a 3-1 victory over Panama, followed by a 5-0 thrashing of Bolivia, and secured the top spot in Group C with a 1-0 win against the USA, thanks to Mathias Olivera’s 66th-minute goal.

Coach Marcelo Bielsa, banned from the touchline during the USA match, has led Uruguay to a strong performance, with 10 wins in his 15 games since taking over last year. Uruguay, with 15 Copa America titles, hopes to end their quarterfinal exit streak from recent tournaments.

Brazil, under coach Dorival Junior, finished second in Group D after a 1-1 draw with Colombia. Raphinha’s early free-kick was cancelled out by Daniel Munoz. Brazil also had a 0-0 draw with Costa Rica and a 4-1 victory over Paraguay.

Despite being unbeaten under Dorival, Brazil has drawn four of their seven matches and seeks to reclaim their form to reach the semifinals. They aim to capture their tenth Copa America title after a runner-up finish in 2021.

With Uruguay in top form and Brazil’s strong Copa America history, this quarterfinal promises to be an exciting contest.

Brazil vs. Uruguay lineups & team news

Brazil will play without Vinicius Junior, who is suspended due to yellow card accumulation. This could see 17-year-old Endrick starting, with Rodrygo shifting to the flank.

Raphinha, Savio, Gabriel Martinelli, and Pepe are vying for the other attacking spot. Left-back Guilherme Arana hopes to replace Wendell, while Douglas Luiz, Andreas Pereira, and Ederson are in contention for a midfield spot ahead of Joao Gomes.

Brazil projected starting lineup (4-2-3-1): Alisson (GK) — Danilo, Militao, Marquinhos, Arana — Guimaraes, Gomes — Raphinha, Paqueta, Rodrygo — Endrick.

Uruguay might miss attacker Maximiliano Araujo for their Copa America quarterfinal against Brazil after he was stretchered off with a neck injury against the USA. Cristian Olivera, who replaced him in that game, is likely to start alongside Facundo Pellistri, Nicolas de la Cruz, and Darwin Nunez in the attack.

Coach Marcelo Bielsa is expected to keep the rest of his lineup unchanged, with Federico Valverde and Manuel Ugarte in midfield and a four-man defense comprising Nahitan Nandez, Ronald Araujo, Mathias Olivera, and Matias Vina.

Uruguay projected starting lineup (4-2-3-1): Rochet (GK) — Nandez, R. Araujo, M. Olivera, Vina — Ugarte, Valverde —  Pellistri, De la Cruz, C. Olivera — Nunez.

Brazil vs. Uruguay prediction

  • Score prediction: Brazil 1-2 Uruguay

An entertaining end-to-end contest is expected, as eight of the last ten meetings between Uruguay and Brazil have produced at least three goals.

With Brazil not firing on all cylinders and missing Vinicius Junior, an unexpected defeat could be on the cards in Las Vegas.

Uruguay’s positive momentum and solid form might just propel them into the semifinals, capitalizing on Brazil's recent struggles. Expect a thrilling match with Uruguay having a slight edge to advance.
