The United States is one game away from defending its World Cup title as it faces the Netherlands in the finals Sunday.

The match will mark the American's fifth appearance in the World Cup final, which is two more than any other nation. The USA is also the first country to reach three-straight finals, and with a win, it could join Germany as the only two countries to win back-to-back World Cup championships.

In what is expected to be an exciting match, the Women's World Cup will feature two of the three top scoring teams so far in the tournament. The U.S. enters Sunday's game with 24 goals so far (which is double the next closest team), while the Netherlands have scored 11 goals (the third most of the World Cup).

She'll be one to contain as the U.S. hopes to keep the score low.

What are three Opta facts to know?

  • The U.S. has won a record 11 straight Women’s World Cup matches and 12 straight in all competitions, keeping eight clean sheets in those 12 games.

  • The Netherlands has gone 10 games unbeaten in all competitions (9W-1D), conceding just four goals in that stretch. The Dutch have won their last nine games in a row.

  • The United States needs two goals to set a new record for the most goals scored at a Women’s World Cup. Only the Germans (two) have allowed fewer goals in the tournament than the Netherlands (three).

Prediction

USA 3, Netherlands 1

While the Netherlands is strong on the attack, the U.S. has figured out its defense as it advanced through the tournament. Alyssa Naeher made a game-changing save to give her confidence in the goal. If the Americans continue with strong communication on the back line and use an aggressive approach on attack, then it's likely they will defend their title.
