The United States women’s national team will face France in a FIFA Women’s World Cup quarterfinal that feels much bigger than that.

It will be played before a capacity crowd. It will be viewed by millions on television in the U.S., although it is scheduled to start late on a work day in North America.

The U.S. is the reigning World Cup champion. France never has earned a place higher than fourth in any major senior international tournament: not the World Cup, not the Olympics, not the European Championships. But France’s program has grown impressively through the course of this decade, and that — and the home-field advantage — is why France was listed as a co-favorite to win the World Cup by many when the tournament began.
