It is perhaps a little earlier than expected, but the U.S. Women's National Soccer Team is ready to take on the Netherlands in a rematch of the 2019 World Cup final.

That game saw the USWNT down the Netherlands 2-0 as part of a coronation that saw the team win its second straight title. The stakes aren't nearly as high in this meeting of Group E opponents, but the outcome will be significant for both teams.

A win by either team virtually guarantees advancement to the knockout stage: Both Team USA and the Netherlands won their first match of the tournament (3-0 vs. Vietnam and 1-0 vs. Portugal, respectively). A loss, however, places pressure on the loser to turn around and win its final game in the hope of advancing past the group stage.

The U.S. breezed through its World Cup opener vs. Vietnam, but perhaps not as much as it might have expected vs. a team making its debut on the world stage. (For comparison, the USWNT beat a Thailand team making a similar appearance 13-0 in the 2019 opener). Sophia Smith scored two first-half goals while Lindsey Horan scored a third in the 77th minute.

Similarly, the Netherlands downed an emotional Portugal team making its World Cup debut as well. Their match didn't have many obvious scoring opportunities, but an early Stephanie van der Gragt goal from a corner kick was all the Dutch needed to win.
