It's been a topic of conversation throughout much of the 2019 FIFA Women's World Cup: Would the U.S. women's national team visit the White House if the Americans won the tournament?
Well, the U.S. won the World Cup with a thrilling 2-0 victory over the Netherlands, but coach Jill Ellis isn't so sure the team will be invited.
When asked if she will attend a celebration at the White House, Ellis said: “I haven’t been invited yet.” The reporter responded by saying, "I'm sure you will." Ellis, however, said with a laugh: "Well, I wouldn't bet on that."
The press conference then shifted to the next question.
The White House conversations started after starter Megan Rapinoe was asked about making a potential visit to the White House earlier in the tournament. She said: "I'm not going to the f—ing White House."
President Donald Trump went on a Twitter rant, calling out the U.S. women's national team star for saying she won't visit the White House and for refusing to sing during the national anthem. He wrote, in part: "Megan should never disrespect our Country, the White House, or our Flag, especially since so much has been done for her & the team."
Rapinoe has since said she stands by her comments but wanted to shift the attention back to the World Cup.
