The USA came through in a must-win situation against Iran and has advanced to the knockout stages of the men's FIFA World Cup, which was the minimum goal set for the team while in Qatar.

In the single-elimination knockout stages anything can happen. And the Americans already know who they'll be facing.

The USA will be taking on the Netherlands, one of the most talented sides in the tournament and considered by many a dark horse to win the tournament as they're on an 18-match unbeaten run.

The Dutch topped Group A after defeating Senegal and Qatar and tying Ecuador. But they didn't look like worldbeaters along the way, so the USA will feel confident they could pull off the upset provided they can contain breakout star attacker Cody Gakpo.

How the USA can advance at the World Cup

Now that the U.S. men's national team are into the knockout rounds, there's no math to do any more. The formula is simple.

Win and move on. Lose and go home.

Each knockout round match needs a winner at the end of it. If teams are tied after 90 minutes, they'll play 30 minutes of extra time. If the deadlock is still not resolved, they go to a penalty shootout to determine a winner.

The USA is now just three games away from the World Cup final. If they can beat the Netherlands in the Round of 16, the quarterfinals, semifinals and final will follow.

The losing semifinalists will play a third-place match the day before the final.
