The United States survived its first must-win game at the 2022 World Cup, so what comes next? 

By defeating Iran 1-0 in the final Group B game Tuesday, the USA earned a spot in the round of 16 as the second-place finisher in the group behind England. 

That sets up a return to the knockout stages, where a European power awaits.

Who does USA play in World Cup Round of 16?

The USA will play Netherlands in the Round of 16.

With the way the bracket is set up, the winner of Group A (Netherlands) will play the runner-up from Group B (USA), while the winner of Group B (England) will play the runner-up from Group A (Senegal). Here's how the final group standings look:

In Group A, the Netherlands secured the top spot earlier Tuesday with a 2-0 defeat of Qatar. Senegal's 2-1 victory over Ecuador sent the African nation through as the second qualifier from the group. 

England wrapped up the top spot in Group B with a 3-0 win against neighbor Wales. The USA held on against Iran to claim the second Round of 16 berth.
