When is USA Copa America squad announced? Dates for USMNT roster release, player list for summer tournament image

The United States men's national team is gearing up to commence its biggest international soccer tournament on home soil in 30 years, as the 2024 Copa America will be played across the U.S.

With an eye towards the 2026 FIFA World Cup, also set to be hosted in the United States, the USMNT will know this summer's competition is of the utmost importance, not only for the results of this particular competition, but also to prove they are ready to compete in front of their own fans in two years' time for the biggest prize of them all.

Head coach Gregg Berhalter steered the United States to a Round of 16 finish at the 2022 World Cup, but a comprehensive defeat to the Netherlands left the USMNT searching for answers. The U.S. still has to prove they can compete with the world's top nations on the biggest stage, and this Copa America is a great place to gain such experience.

With the tournament fast approaching, The Sporting News breaks down when rosters are set to be released and when Berhatler will determine the best 23 players to take along for the Copa America ride.

When are Copa America rosters released?

CONMEBOL has stipulated that preliminary rosters are due May 5, while the final roster for each nation is due by June 12.

Provisional rosters can be anywhere between 35 and 55 players, and are often maximized by most federations, while final rosters must be no more than 23 players in size.

Nations are then allowed to replace anyone on their final 23-man roster due to injury up to 24 hours prior to the opening match. All injury replacements must be players listed on the preliminary roster.

However, most federations make a public announcement of their squads prior to the official deadline.

When will USA release its official Copa America roster?

While final rosters are due June 12, U.S. head coach Gregg Berhalter has selected a 27-man squad for his side's pre-Copa America training camp. That 27-man squad includes striker Josh Sargent, who entered the training camp with a foot injury and missed the Colombia friendly match and has been ruled out of the subsequent Brazil friendly match.

There are also other players, such as Timothy Tillman and Mark McKenzie, who are on the fringe and could be dropped. Tyler Adams, an important piece for this team, has been dealing with an ongoing injury as well and is not yet 100% fit.

Who will be on the USMNT Copa America roster?

While most U.S. players who will participate at the Copa America are those who have established themselves as first-team regulars, there are a few question marks around the USMNT roster. The likes of Christian Pulisic and Weston McKennie will be locks to make the cut if healthy, and Matt Turner is still considered the likely starter in goal.

The most notable issue for the U.S. involves a devastating injury to Sergino Dest, which has left the United States searching for answers at right-back. Joe Scally and Shaq Moore are the most likely replacements to start, but Berhalter could also use Weston McKennie, Tim Weah, and even Tyler Adams there in a pinch.

Additionally, injury troubles for Tyler Adams this year could hamper his contributions, while there are questions at the striker position with players in and out of goal-scoring form.
