Portland Timbers captain Liam Ridgewell and goalkeeper Jake Gleeson were arrested early Tuesday morning in Oregon on charges of driving under the influence of intoxicants.

Timbers frustrated by mistakes in season-ending loss

The arrests in Clackamas County outside of Portland came less than 36 hours after the Timbers' MLS campaign ended Sunday with a 4-1 loss at the Vancouver Whitecaps. The defending MLS Cup champion Timbers finished seventh in the Western Conference, two points behind Sporting Kansas City for the final playoff slot.

Gleeson was involved in a two-car crash around 10:30 p.m., a police spokesman told The Oregonian, before asking Ridgewell to pick him up. Officers gave both players sobriety tests and determined they were impaired.

Bail was set at $7,500 for each player and posted. MLS requires that players arrested on such charges undergo an assessment by the league's Substance Abuse and Behavioral Health Program, with their eligibility suspended until the investigation is complete.

Ridgewell, 32, earned an All-Star selection this past summer and finished his third MLS campaign with 22 appearances. Gleeson, 26, logged 28 matches in his sixth season with the Timbers, leading MLS with 118 saves.
