STATS

Taking in European fixtures at Wembley this season was supposed to inspire Tottenham, but a grand stage has proved to be more of a hindrance than a help.

Opting to take their continental clashes away from White Hart Lane allowed Spurs to pack more followers into eagerly-anticipated contests against the best sides in the business.

Mauricio Pochettino’s side have, however, given a loyal fan base little to cheer on ‘home’ soil.

They did bring the curtain down on their Champions League group stage campaign with a 3-1 victory over CSKA Moscow, but defeats to Bayer Leverkusen and Monaco cost them dear.

A consolation prize of a place in the Europa League offered another route to European glory, but a 2-2 draw with Gent in the second leg of their last-32 encounter was not enough to prevent another early exit.

Spurs have clearly struggled at the home of English football this season, with their efforts in the Premier League showing that they do know how to keep the back door bolted.

Spurs stumble out of Europa League

They have done themselves few favours in Europe, though, with their struggles often self inflicted.

Against Gent, Dele Alli collected a reckless red card while Harry Kane put through his own net.

Fortunately for the England international, he remains a key man for Spurs at the opposite end of the field.
