Indian Super League (ISL) outfit FC Pune City will take on I-League side Shillong Lajong in a Round of 16 clash of the Super Cup 2018.

Ranko Popovic’s men had a memorable campaign in the recently concluded ISL where they entered the playoff stages for the first time in the history of the tournament.

Finishing fourth in the league stages, the Stallions’ campaign was ultimately ended by eventual winners Chennaiyin FC in the playoffs. While the Pune outfit will be proud of their season, they will want to finish it on a high and a Super Cup trophy might just be the icing on the cake they desire.

The ISL side, however, have registered only four overseas players for the inaugural competition instead of the six that are permitted. They will be missing the services of Uruguayan striker Emiliano Alfaro for the tournament. His partneship with Brazilian playmaker Marcelinho was crucial in Pune's ISL campaign with the duo scoring 17 goals betwen them.

On the other hand, Shillong Lajong have not had the best of seasons in the I-League where they finished sixth. Assistant coach Alison Kharsyntiew has taken charge of the outfit for the most part of the season with head coach Bobby Nongbet taking a leave of absence due to personal reasons.

It has not been all doom and gloom for the Northeast outfit who have a squad with a young core. Their 19-year-old skipper Samuel Lalmuanpuia was awarded the ‘Emerging Player’ award by the league on its completion.

Having registered only four overseas players in their Super Cup squad initially, Lajong have strengthened their unit just in time for the clash against Pune City. They have roped in Nigerian striker Onwemelu Emmanuel Uchenna just a few days back to take the place of Gambia’s Saihou Jagne who has had to return home due to personal reasons.

With the clash seeing another matchup between an I-League and an ISL club, it will be interesting to see who comes away with the bragging rights this time.
