The U.S. women's national team fell on Friday in a heavyweight bout against England 2-1 at Wembley Stadium, but there was little negativity surrounding the performance in a showcase match between two highly-ranked teams.

Head coach Vlatko Andonovski praised his team's ability to deliver a high-level showing on the heels of a tumultuous week after the release of the investigation into abuse in women's professional soccer. They now travel to Spain where they take on La Roja, who are also dealing with significant off-field issues.

A conglomeration of 15 core players in the Spain squad withdrew from international consideration in protest of head coach Jorge Vilda, who they believe is unqualified and unfit. The federation responded by threatening the players with lengthy bans while backing the coach.

The short-term result is that Spain are left with a young, inexperienced, and less talented squad missing a host of key, experienced players. Vilda, meanwhile, continues in his role he's held since 2015, overseeing a rise to international prominence throughout his tenure, but also promoting what the players believe to be an unpleasant team environment.

That shorthanded Spain squad still managed to produce a 1-1 draw against No. 3-ranked Sweden last time out, proving they're still a capable bunch. After falling a goal down early in the match, Spain held 66 percent possession and ripped off 26 total shots as they finally found an equalizer from Marta Cardona with seven minutes to go.

Spain vs. USWNT lineups, team news

Spain are without a host of aforementioned players who refuse to play for the current head coach. They are missing highly-capped players such as Leila Ouahabi (Man City, 53 caps), Ona Batlle (Man United, 28 caps), Irene Paredes (Barcelona, 88 caps), Patricia Guijarro (Barcelona, 52 caps), Aitana Bonmati (Barcelona, 46 caps), Jennifer Hermoso (Pachuca, 93 caps), and Mariona Caldentey (Barcelona, 54 caps) among a number of other players.

Superstar Alexia Putellas, who is the defending Ballon d'Or winner and the favorite to win this year's award next week, was also part of the mass withdrawal, but would not be available to play anyways due to her torn ACL suffered this past spring.

That chaos leaves the national team with an incredibly young and inexperienced side that nowhere near represents the nation's footballing power. Furthermore, Spain lost midfielder Irene Guerrero to an injury in the draw with Sweden last time out.

Spain projected starting lineup (4-3-3): M. Rodriguez (GK) — O. Hernandez, Galvez, Andres, Carmona — Zornoza, Abelleira, Guerrero — Redondo, Gonzalez, del Castillo.

It will be interesting to see how USWNT head coach Andonovski plays this match. The competition level and intensity will certainly drop from the match against England, and it could be a chance to give some different players a look.

One player who should remain is Trinity Rodman who stepped up in the absence of injured Alex Morgan and Mallory Pugh. It could be a chance for Ashley Hatch to come in and prove she belongs on the depth chart behind Morgan at center forward.

If Andonovski looks to rotate his midfield, Ashley Sanchez or Kristie Mewis could be brought in. In defense, the center-back pairing of Alana Cook and Naomi Girma was often stretched and exposed in transition, which could lead to changes. Left-back Emily Fox was sent home after suffering a concussion against England, and while a return to 90 minutes of action for Crystal Dunn may not have been on the cards this soon, her appearance against England suggested she may be in line to replace Fox.

USA projected starting lineup (4-3-3): Naeher (GK) — Huerta, Cook, Sauerbrunn, Dunn — Lavelle, Sullivan, Horan — Smith, Hatch, Rodman.

Spain vs. USWNT betting odds

Odds via Sports Interaction (Canada).

The United States would likely have been a road underdog against Spain if La Roja's full squad was available, but in the wake of the withdrawals, it leaves Spain as a clear second-fiddle in this match.

That said, the U.S. showed a few weaknesses against England, and in the absence of a few key attacking players, Spain could look to the film from Friday to try and keep the United States off the scoresheet. It could be that the hosts bunker in and make life difficult for the USWNT, looking to hit on the counter, an area where the U.S. struggled against England.
