South Korea vs. Ghana final score, result: Mohammed Kudus double gives Black Stars victory in World Cup thriller image

Ghana revived their hopes of reaching the World Cup knockout stages for only the second time with a thrilling Group H victory after a second-half fightback from South Korea.

The 2010 quarterfinalists impressed in an opening 3-2 defeat against Portugal and went in front in the 24th minute when defender Mohammed Salisu swept home Jordan Ayew's curling free-kick.

Ghana had another 10 minutes later after Ayew whipped in another superb delivery from the left and the faintest of headers from Mohammed Kudus doubled the Black Stars' lead.

South Korea, who finished fourth at the 2002 finals and began with a useful 0-0 draw against Uruguay, hit back with two headers from Cho Gue-sung in quick succession to draw level after the break.

But Ghana, the lowest-ranked side in the competition at 61st in the world, regained the lead in the 68th minute when Kudus side-footed home his second from Gideon Mensah's cross.

They held on amid a late onslaught to earn a precious win ahead of a final group game against Uruguay, while South Korea coach Paulo Bento, who was red-carded after the final whistle, must pick his players up before facing Portugal on Friday.

South Korea vs. Ghana live updates, highlights from 2022 World Cup

FULL-TIME: South Korea 2-3 Ghana

South Korea coach Paulo Bento is fuming that his side were not allowed to take another corner right at the end. Referee Anthony Taylor gives him a red card for his protests, after the whistle has gone. Bento will not be on the touchline for their final group game against Portugal.

Watch if you're in the USA:

90th min+11: That's it! Ghana have done it! They end a run of five World Cup games without a win. And boy, did they have to work for it.

90th min+9: The umpteenth corner from South Korea, and Ghana get it away with a firm header.

90th min+7: Another ball into the box, Cho Gue-sung throws himself at it amid a bundle of Ghana defenders, but Ati-Zigi punches it away. Can South Korea salvage a last-ditch draw?

90th min+4: Close! South Korea throwing everything at this now. Cho Gue-sung, searching for a hat-trick, gets a shot away but Lawrence Ati-Zigi makes the save.

90th min: We'll have 10 MINUTES of added time. Given there have been very few injuries and the game has ticked along at rapid pace, that's rather hard to fathom. Not for the first time at this World Cup.

90th min: Is this a chance for Son Heung-min? He switches onto his right foot and gets a shot away, but it's blocked. There's half an appeal for a penalty for handball, but nothing doing.

84th min: Chance for South Korea! A cross from the right  arrives at the feet of Kim Jin-su inside the Ghana area, but the left-back smashes it over the bar. Really should have got it on target, at least, from there.

76th min: South Korea piling on the pressure now and it takes a goal-line clearance from Mohammed Salis to preserve Ghana's lead.

75th min: Close! Lee Kang-in cracks a free-kick left-footed over the wall from distance but Ghana keeper Lawrence Ati-Zigi gets down well to nudge it wide of the right post.

68th min: Ghana are back in front! Gideon Mensah cuts it back from the left flank, Inaki Williams mis-kicks in the middle and the ball falls to Mohammed Kudus, who side-foots it home with his left foot for his second goal of the game.  Where is this game going now?

Watch if you're in the UK:

61st min: SOUTH KOREA HAVE ANOTHER! It's another brilliant ball in from the left flank, this time from Kim Jin-su, and Cho Gue-sung times his leap to perfection to head powerfully past Ati-Zigi. We're all square!

Watch if you're in Canada:

58th min: South Korea are back in it! Tariq Lamptey loses the ball and Lee Kang-in, just on as a substitute, whips in a great cross from the left which Cho Gue-sung heads home from close range. Game on!

Watch if you're in the USA:

53rd min: It's taken 52 minutes or so (plus added time) into their second game but South Korea finally have an effort on goal! A great cross in from the left from Kim Jin-su and Cho Gue-sung twists to get some power on his header, but Ghana keeper Lawrence Ati-Zigi beats it away.

50th min: Ghana full-back Tariq Lamptey finds himself in advanced position in the South Korea penalty area. The Brighton man cuts inside and lets fly with a left-foot shot, but it flies wide of the left post.

46th min: We're off again in the Education City Stadium. Have South Korea learned the lessons of that first half or will Ghana continue to earn the gold - or should that be black? - stars in this Group H encounter?

HALF-TIME South Korea 0-2 Ghana

It was all South Korea for the first 20 minutes but Ghana held firm and two brilliant deliveries from Crystal Palace forward Jordan Ayew have put the Black Stars in command.

45th min+5: Wicked corner from Jordan Ayew, who has been the main man for Ghana in this first half. It lands right underneath the South Korea crossbar and Thomas Partey gets his head to it, but it flies over. Close!

45th min+1: We'll have five minutes of added time at the end of this first half.

45th min: Jung Woo-young tries his luck from distance with a right-foot curler, but it's well wide of the far post. Son gives him a 'why didn't you pass to me?' look.

38th min: Can South Korea find a response? Son Heung-min with a bit of space in a central position, but he can't get a shot away. The Spurs star lays it off to Kwon Chang-hoon, who thunders a left-footed strike over the bar.

34th min: Ghana have scored again! Another brilliant ball in from Jordan Ayew, whipped in right-footed from the left flank, right into the mixer. Mohammed Kudus gets the slightest of touches with his head, but that's all it needs. 2-0 to Ghana!

Watch if you're in the USA:

27th min: Jung Woo-young goes into the referee's notebook for a clumsy challenge.

24th min: GOAL FOR GHANA! Against the run of play. Jordan Ayew curls in a nasty free-kick that South Korea fail to deal with, and defender Mohammed Salisu sweeps it home left-footed from close range. Referee Anthony Taylor checks with VAR there was nothing amiss - a suggestion of handball - but it's given!

Watch if you're in the UK:

21st min: Bit of afters from Cho after a tackle on Daniel Amartey, who is unimpressed and flicks out an arm which catches Amartey in the face. Nothing too malicious in that, but the Ghana defender collects the first booking of the game.

18th min: Two more corners for South Korea, their sixth and seventh of the game. Cho Gue-sung gets the slightest of flicks onto the first one, which hits Mohammed Salisu's shoulder before Ghana clear. Son's second set-piece is headed clear by Gideon Mensah.

13th min: It's all South Korea in these opening stages. Son Heung-min forces their fifth corner already, but it comes to nothing. Ghana are penned inside their own half but Jordan Ayew does well to nick the ball and win a relieving free-kick. The Black Stars have plenty of support.

Watch if you're in the USA:

8th min: Another half-chance for South Korea as Jeong Woo-yeong gets himself into a shooting position but Brighton's Tariq Lamptey does well to get a block in.

4th min: South Korea the first to show. Kwon Chang-hoon, who has come into the team on the right-hand side as one of three changes, gets a good ball in directed at Son Heung-min, but Ghana get it clear.

1st min: South Korea kick off. We're underway.

5 mins from kickoff: It's time for the anthems. South Korea first...and now Ghana.  Kickoff won't be long...

10 mins from kickoff: The teams are out on the pitch at the Education City Stadium.

20 mins from kickoff: Not long til kickoff now. How many South Korea fans will wear see wearing a mask today to show support to their star man Son Heung-min?

Remember, Ghana need a win to keep their tournament going and South Korea need a win to boost their chances of progressing. Neither side can afford a defeat.

50 mins from kickoff: The teams are in!

1 hr 25 from kickoff: A couple of stats for you...

- This will be the first meeting between the two sides since 2014 when Ghana ran out as easy 4-0 winners in a friendly.

- Interestingly, South Korea have scored exactly two goals in all three of their prior World Cup matches vs. African opposition.

- Ghana are winless across their past five World Cup outings after their 3-2 loss to Portugal on matchday one.

1 hr 55 from kickoff: Ghana coach Otto Addo knows all too well about the threat Son Heung-min can cause his team and he'll reunite against him today, having previously coached the South Korea forward at youth level.

Addo was working for German club Hamburg when he first encountered Son, who he recommended for the first team.

"He’s very, very disciplined," he said. "This is what I hoped for, and I expected it."
