Senegal vs. Netherlands final score, result: Gakpo and Klaassen strike late in World Cup 2022 Group A match image

Cody Gakpo's late header and a 99th-minute strike from substitute Davy Klaassen put Netherlands in pole position to qualify as Group A winners as they condemned Senegal to a dispiriting defeat in their opening 2022 World Cup match.

The contest between the two highest-ranked teams in the group looked to be heading for a drab goalless draw until Gakpo rose highest to glance home Frenkie De Jong's floated ball into the area ahead of Edouard Mendy.

The Chelsea goalkeeper also might have done better in the ninth minute of injury time as he could only parry a weak effort from Memphis Depay into the path of fellow Dutch substitute Davy Klaassen, who swept home the clinching goal.

Senegal looked relatively toothless in attack in the absence of their talisman and top scorer Sadio Mane, ruled out of the tournament after knee surgery.

Ismaila Sarr whipped in a curling effort which Virgil van Dijk diverted over in the first half, while Pape Gueye forced debutant goalkeeper Andries Noppert into a late save, but the African champions lacked energy and a cutting edge.

The Netherlands, who welcomed back leading marksman Depay - sidelined for two months with a hamstring injury - as a second-half substitute, can now look forward with confidence to Friday's second game against Ecuador, while Senegal face hosts Qatar on the same day.

Senegal vs. Netherlands live updates, highlights from 2022 World Cup

FULL-TIME: Senegal 0-2 Netherlands

Job done for Louis van Gaal's side, who were unconvincing for long periods but are now favourites to progress as Group A winners after that late double whammy for Senegal.

99th minute: 2-0 to the Netherlands! Memphis Depay races on to a headed flick-on and drills in a left-foot effort that Edouard Mendy can only parry into the path of Davy Klaassen, who plants it into the corner from close range.

94th minute: Cody Gakpo gets a warm reception from the Dutch fans as he is replaced by Marten de Roon for these final few minutes.

93rd minute: Reasonable chance for Bamba Dieng as he rises to meet a cross but the Senegal substitute can't keep his header down.

90th minute: There will be EIGHT minutes of time added on.

86th minute: Can Senegal respond to that late setback? Pape Gueye drills in a left-footed shot that Andries Noppert gets down well to, but it's going to take something special to deny the Netherland an opening victory now.

84th minute: GOAL FOR THE NETHERLANDS! Out of nowhere, Frenkie de Jong floats a lovely ball into the Senegal box and Cody Gakpo - who has been pushed further forward in these later stages - gets to it just ahead of the outrushing Edouard Mendy, his glancing header giving the Dutch the lead with six minutes left.

78th minute: The Dutch also make a change, Teun Koopmeiners taking over from Steven Berghuis.  This game is petering out into a 0-0 draw unless something changes very soon. The second half has been poor so far.

72nd minute: An effort on goal! Idrissa Gueye unleashes a powerful right-foot effort that is beaten away by Andries Noppert, but the whistle goes for an offside against another Senegal player, so it wouldn't have counted anyway.

71st minute: Sad sight for Cheikhou Kouyate as the Senegal midfielder is taken off on a stretcher, with Marseille's Pape Gueye coming on to replace him. Nicolas Jackson is also on for the African champions.

68th minute: That was Boulaye Dia's last contribution for Senegal. He is replaced by Marseille striker Bamba Dieng as the Indomitable Lions look for greater punch up front.

65th minute: Half a chance for Senegal striker Boulaye Dia on the turn, which brings a comfortable save out of debutant Dutch goalkeeper Andries Noppert at his near post.

62nd minute: Here comes Memphis Depay, who has 42 goals from 81 caps but hasn't played for two months after a hamstring injury. Can he inject some quality into this game? Abdou Diallo has not recovered from that knock by the way, and is replaced by Ismail Jakobs.

60th minute: As Senegal's Abdou Diallo receives some treatment, it looks like the Netherlands are readying Memphis Depay for action.

58th minute: The game has gone a little stale but Senegal spring into life, a ball in from the left reaching Krepin Diatta at the far post, but the striker is always stretching and can't divert it goalwards.

53rd minute: Another Netherlands corner, and this is a chance! But Virgil Van Dijk heads it over. The Liverpool defender would have expected to do better than that.

50th minute: A burst of pace from Cody Gakpo earns the Netherlands a corner, but Senegal goalkeeper Edouard Mendy gathers it comfortably.

48th minute: The Dutch didn't qualify for the last World Cup but they arrived at this one in confident mood. Coach Louis van Gaal, who led them to the semi-finals and a third-place finish in 2014, openly stated his belief that they have a “great chance of becoming world champions” in Qatar. They've not quite looked like justifying that status so far...

46th minute: The players are back out at the Al Thumana Stadium and we'll go again...

HALF-TIME: Senegal 0-0 Netherlands

45th min: Netherlands on the counter after clearing a Senegal corner, but the final pass is just too long for Steven Bergwijn. We'll have two minutes of added time at the end of this first half.

41st min: Senegal with a chance to create something from a free-kick to the left of the penalty area, but Idrissa Gueye's delivery doesn't beat the first defender. Poor from the Everton man.

39th min: Lovely move from the Dutch after Frenkie De Jong brings the ball out from the back. It comes to Vincent Janssen on the edge of the area, but his left-footed snap-shot flies narrowly over.

33rd min: Straight back up the other end, and Youssouf Sabaly drills in a right-foot effort from distance but that's not troubling Andries Noppert, making his debut in the Netherlands goal.

32nd min: The Netherlands with a free-kick in a good position on the right of the area, 30 yards out. Cody Gakpo swings it in with his right foot, but Senegal clear that one with ease.

28th min: This time it's Senegal with another sight at goal, but Idrissa Gueye drags his shot well wide. Both sides looking vulnerable at the back, but we're still goalless as we reach the half-hour mark.

26th min: Corner to the Netherlands at the other end. Virgil Van Dijk rises highest but can only direct his header wide of the target.

24th min: Close! Great bit of skill from Senegal forward Ismaila Sarr, who drops his shoulder on the left of the box and whips in a curling effort which looks to be heading in before Virgil Van Dijk heads it over for a corner.

19th min: Another opportunity for the Dutch! Frenkie De Jong finds himself in space in the Senegal area and transfers the ball onto his right foot to shoot, but a defender nips in to clear.

16th min: The Netherlands produce a flowing move down the right but Senegal manage to clear the danger. But straight away Cody Gakpo swings in a dangerous cross to the far post where Daley Blind gets above Youssouf Sabaly but his header drifts wide of the post.

9th min: End to end stuff as next it's Senegal's Cheikhou Kouyate who tries his luck at goal, but the Nottingham Forest midfielder's left-foot effort drifts harmlessly over.

7th min: A good ball is whipped into the Netherlands box which just eludes the outstretched leg of Senegal's Pape Abou Cisse. Bright start this from the African champions.

5th min: It's an open start here with both teams showing good attacking intent in these opening exchanges. Promising for the Dutch as Cody Gakpo find himself in a good position but he takes an extra touch and the chance is gone.

1st min: Nervous start from the Netherlands! Virgil Van Dijk loses possession in the Dutch half, Senegal's Ismaila Sarr cuts the ball in from the left and Boulaye Dia gets a shot off that Frenkie De Jong deflects for a corner.

1 min from kickoff: The two captains are shaking hands in the centre circle, and we're about to get underway. It's the Netherlands to kick off...let's go!

5 mins from kickoff: It's time for the anthems at the Al Thumama stadium. We'll start with Senegal and 'The Red Lion', followed by the Netherlands' 'Wilhelmus'...

7 mins from kickoff: If Senegal are without Mane, the Netherlands are also weakened by the absence of Memphis Depay, far and away the most prolific striker in their squad with 42 goals from 82 caps.

No other member of the squad is into double figures – Davy Klaasen is the next highest on nine – but Vincent Janssen, who starts today, has a reasonable record with seven goals in 20 caps to date.

Look out too for PSV Eindhoven forward Cody Gakpo. The 23-year-old is reportedly being watched by most of Europe’s major clubs, so a decent World Cup could put a move firmly on the radar.

10 mins from kickoff: Senegal’s hopes of matching their feat of 2002, when they stunned holders France and reached the last eight on their first appearance at the finals, were dealt a major blow last week when Sadio Mane, who finished second in this year’s Ballon D’Or vote, was ruled out with a knee injury which required surgery.

In the absence of the former Liverpool star, the likes of Boulaye Dia, who is on loan with Salernitana in Italy’s Serie A, and Watford striker Ismaila Sarr will be expected to shoulder the goalscoring burden.

But even without Mane, Senegal have plenty of top-level talent in their ranks. Chelsea defender Kalidou Koulibaly captains a side also featuring clubmate and goalkeeper Eduardo Mendy, while the midfield includes Everton midfielder Idrissa Gueye, the most capped player in the Lions squad with 95, Leicester City’s Nampalys Mendy and Cheikhou Kouyate of Nottingham Forest.

20 mins from kickoff: The Dutch fans are always a colourful presence and after missing out on the last World Cup, it's no surprise to find the oranje in full effect once more in Qatar.

30 mins from kickoff: This is the first of eight games to be staged at the Al Thumana Stadium – a 40,000-seater arena close to the Hamad International Airport on the southern side of Doha. Its circular design and white exterior was apparently inspired by the ghafiya hat, a traditional woven cap worn by men and boys across the Middle East. The stadium will also host a last-16 match and a quarter-final.

45 mins from kickoff: And now we have the Senegal team too.

With talisman and top scorer Sadio Mane ruled out after undergoing knee surgery, Watford striker Ismaila Sarr joins Boulaye Dia - on loan with Salernitana in Italy’s Serie A - and Monaco's Krepin Diatta in a front three for the African champions.

Senegal lineup (4-3-3, right to left): 1-Edouard Mendy (GK) — 21-Youssouf Sabaly, 12-Pape Abou Cisse, 3-Kalidou Koulibaly, 4-Abdou Diallo — 8-Cheikhou Kouyate, 6-Nampalys Mendy, 5-Idrissa Gana Gueye — 15-Krepin Diatta, 21-Boulaye Dia, 18-Ismaila Sarr

50mins from kickoff: As we await confirmation of the Senegal team, supporters of the Indomitable Lions are already making their presence felt at the Al Thumana Stadium.

60mins from kickoff:  The Netherlands team is out!

Confirmation that SC Heerenveen goalkeeper Andries Noppert will make his Netherlands debut against Senegal ahead of Justin Bijlow and Remko Pasvee.

With leading scorer Memphis Depay still working his way back to fitness, Vincent Janssen starts up front alongside Steven Bergwijn, with Cody Gakpo playing just behind them.

Netherlands lineup (3-5-2, right to left): 23-Andries Noppert (GK) — 3-Matthijs De Ligt, 4-Virgil Van Dijk, 5-Nathan Ake — 22-Denzel Dumfries, 11-Steven Berghuis, 21-Frenkie De Jong, 17-Daley Blind — 8-Cody Gakpo — 18-Vincent Janssen, 7-Steven Bergwijn

80 mins from kickoff: We should have some teams for you fairly shortly, but here are a few clues possibly about who will be donning the Senegal shirts today.

1 hr 40 mins from kickoff:  Bit of an update from earlier today in case you missed it on the armband controversy that was bubbling up on the eve of the tournament. The Netherlands soccer federation is the leader of the “One Love” anti-discrimination movement, with the captains of eight countries competing in Qatar planning to wear armbands with a multi-coloured heart-shaped logo as a protest against some of the host country’s laws and human rights record.

But that plan has been scrapped at the 11th hour, over fears that players could be fined by FIFA, or even shown a yellow card for doing so. You can read more about that decision via this link:

2 hrs from kickoff: HOTSHOT MEMPHIS!!

Dutch star Memphis Depay netted 12 goals in UEFA World Cup qualifying - only matched by Harry Kane in Europe - can the Barcelona star carry that form into Qatar?

2 hrs 35 mins from kickoff: Are the Netherlands hinting at a late call up for the 2022 World Cup?

3 hrs 15 mins from kickoff: The excitement is continuing to build ahead of KO in Al Thumama with fans ready for kick off in just over three hours time.

3 hrs 45 mins from kickoff: Despite missing their talismanic forward Mane, the Senegal squad were in party mood in their pre-tournament media duties, as the Lions of Teranga aim to build on their 2021 Africa Cup of Nations success.

4 hrs 45 mins from kickoff: Sadio Mane shared a pre-match message in which he revealed he went under the knife in midweek, but that "I'm sure that the Lions are going to transcend and will face every match like a final ... I'm convinced that my teammates are going to battle as one as they usually do in order to honor our dear Senegal."

5 hrs from kickoff: The headline of Monday's Sportwereld in the Netherlands is "Let's go!" with the subhead noting just how many days it's been since the Dutch last played a World Cup game — 3,054 :
