After emphatically brushing Round of 16 opponent Motagua aside, the Seattle Sounders now take a massive step up in competition with a quarterfinal matchup against Liga MX side Club Leon.

The Sounders struggled in the first leg against its Honduran opponents last round, but a massive 5-0 second leg victory earned a quarterfinal spot.

Leon also had little trouble in the Round of 16, blanking Guatemalan side Guastatoya across both legs for a 3-0 aggregate victory. Elias Hernandez scored two of the three goals, a big threat on the wing.

These two teams matched up in last year's Leagues Cup final, with Club Leon emerging with a 3-2 victory.

In the first of three quarterfinal matchups between the neighboring North American leagues in this competition, who will get the early advantage?

Seattle Sounders vs Leon lineups

A pair of 1-0 losses to start MLS play is worrying for Seattle, despite the 5-0 destruction of Motagua last round of this tournament. Goals will need to be found in the absence of injured strike pair Raul Ruidiaz and Will Bruin.

The introduction of 16-year-old Reed Baker-Whiting against Real Salt Lake did little to help the cause, and both Cristian Roldan and Jordan Morris could be recalled back to the starting lineup after sitting against RSL. Nicolas Lodeiro's fitness is in question after departing at halftime in the MLS season opener against Nashville and missing out against RSL altogether.

Brian Schmetzer has a choice to make at center back, with Abdoulae CissokoXavier ArreagaJackson Ragen, and Yeimar Gomez all seeing time at the spot despite the young season.

Seattle Sounders projected lineup (4-2-3-1): Frei (GK) — Tolo, Arreaga, Gomez, A. Roldan — Joao Paulo, Vargas  — Morris, Rusnak, C. Roldan — Montero.

Leon boss Ariel Holan has rotated his squad significantly over the last few weeks, so predicting his starting lineup for any given match can be a difficult prospect. He is, however, consistent in playing a 4-2-3-1 formation, with Santiago Ormeno often the choice up top, although occasionally Holan prefers to play a winger like Jean Meneses or Federico Martinez in the central striker role.

A pair of South Americans in Gary Kagelmacher and Stiven Barreiro have split time at center back alongside mainstay William Tesillo, leaving the manager with a choice to make.

Midfielder Omar Fernandez has missed the last two league matches and his status could be in question, leaving Angel MenaVictor Davila, or Jean Meneses to take his place if absent.

Leon projected lineup (4-2-3-1): Cota (GK) — Villa, Tesillo, Kagelmacher, Buron — Ambriz, Colombatto — Meneses, Martinez, Hernandez — Ormeno.
