Harry Kane has backed Wayne Rooney to captain England when he makes his surprise return to the international fold next week.
Rooney is to come out of international retirement to make his 120th and final England appearance against the United States at Wembley on November 15.
The game has been named the ‘Wayne Rooney Foundation International’, to help raise funds for the former Manchester United striker’s charity.
After news of Rooney’s return drew a mixed response, the Football Association revealed the D.C. United striker would only make a second-half cameo appearance at Wembley.
It was also confirmed that the 33-year-old would not wear his usual number 10 shirt and would not captain the side.
Tottenham striker – and current Three Lions skipper – Kane sees differently, however, and when asked whether Rooney should take the armband against the United States, he said: “Yes, of course. He deserves it.
“He was a great captain for us. He was the captain when I first got into the squad. If he plays, of course he’ll be the captain.”
Kane also thinks the decision to bring Rooney back into the squad is a fitting way to honour England’s record goalscorer.
“I think it’s great. It’s a real good thing for everyone to be a part of,” he added. “Wayne was one of our greatest ever England players. He’s our greatest goalscorer and so why not give him the send-off he deserves?
“I’ve not spoken to Gareth [Southgate] too much about how he’s going to do it or how long he’s going to play but it will be great to see him again and I’m sure he’ll be looking forward to seeing a few of the boys.
“It’s a great experience to have for the younger players in our team. Everyone should get right behind it and it will be a great send-off.”
Kane has scored 19 times so far in his England career – 34 goals shy of Rooney’s current record of 53, but was non-committal on whether he has an eye on surpassing that tally.
“There’s still a long way to go,” said the 25-year-old. “But hopefully I can keep fit and healthy and score a few more goals. And we’ll see in a few years how close I am.”
