Manchester United lost their second friendly in a row as Real Betis beat Erik ten Hag's side 1-0 thanks to a second-half Nabil Fekir finish.

Fekir put the hosts ahead shortly after the interval and finished off a beautiful move. Borja Iglesias picked out the Frenchman wonderfully before Fekir tucked past Tom Heaton.

Ten Hag was critical of his side in midweek after they lost 4-2 to Cadiz, and he will probably have more of the same to say after tonight's display.

United hardly created any chances going forward and the only time they were tested defensively, they conceded.

But these friendly fixtures in Spain were not about results whatsoever, the young players and academy products gained vital experience and important minutes with the first team.

It also gave the likes of Aaron Wan-Bissaka a run out, another senior member of the squad that has not played much in recent months.

United will be back in competitive action on December 21 when they face Vincent Kompany's Burnley in the Carabao Cup.

Real Betis vs. Man United live updates, highlights from mid-season friendly

FT: Real Betis 1-0 Manchester United

90th min: It's nearly over. If you're still following along, thank you! This has been an incredibly dull affair.

82nd min: One final throw of the dice for Ten Hag. Charlie Savage and Marc Jurado come on for Iqbal and Wan-Bissaka.

73rd min: Heaton makes another good save. The ball is whipped in and gets a flick on before the United goalkeeper manages to push it wide.

68th min: Emeran has looked bright since coming on for United. He's just curled a shot wide and is taking players on in an attempt to get something going for United.

63rd min: Hugill and Emeran come on for Garnacho and Elanga. United still trail by a goal.

57th min: Elanga uses his trickery to burst into the box but before he can get a shot away he is brilliantly tackled. United still are yet to create a clear-cut chance.

49th min: GOAL! Iglesias beautifully picks out Fekir who tucks a left-footed finish past Heaton. Betis lead!

46th min: The players are back out and there have been multiple substitutions. Heaton, Mainoo, Murray and Shoretire on for De Gea, Hansen-Aaroen, Williams and Martial.

HT: Real Betis 0-0 Manchester United

It has been a classic first-half-pre-season performance from both sides as chances have been limited and the intensity has not been there. The hosts had the best chance when they struck the post early on and Martial's dipping effort is the closest United have come, however, neither side has troubled the goalkeepers.

43rd min: Martial again is getting involved on the edge of the box, this time he tries his luck with a dipping effort but it goes wide.

39th min: Martial tees up McTominay on the edge of the box but he slices an effort as he is chopped down. No free-kick and the shot goes high and wide.

36th min: Garnacho is released down the left and cuts the ball back for Iqbal who uses his quick feet to beat a man but cannot get past the second. United still yet to test the Betis goalkeeper.

30th min: Iglesias is granted time on the edge of the box and has a go but his effort is right at De Gea, who collects with ease. United go up the other end and Elanga drags a shot well wide.

22nd min: Betis strike the post! It was a great strike from outside the box and it may have taken a deflection to put it onto the post but United get away with one there. It was a fine strike from Henrique.

16th min: Mengi appears to have picked up an injury off the ball and he looks really frustrated. The United centre-back tried to hobble off the pitch but the stretcher has now been called for and he will be substituted. It looks as though Rhys Bennett is going to be replacing Mengi.

15th min: Hansen-Aaroen finds Garnacho well in the box and the Argentine tries to cut inside onto his right foot but the ball gets tangled in between his feet and Betis clear the danger.

10th min: Garnacho is enjoying his time out on the left flank as he has space to occupy but is yet to cause Betis any trouble so far. United have looked slow in their build-up play and the home side are comfortable.

6th min: Williams is called into action at the back as Betis attack down the left. They manage to get a shot off quickly but the United left-back clears well. Iglesias' strength is causing Mengi a few problems at the back in these early stages.

Kickoff: We are underway in Spain, the hosts get the game started.

9 mins from kickoff: There has reportedly been a late change to the United starting lineup this evening. Donny van de Beek will no longer start and Hansen-Aaroen takes his place.

15 mins from kickoff: The United manager also discussed the decision to put De Gea back in between the sticks.

20 mins from kickoff: Erik ten Hag has been speaking to MUTV ahead of the match and wants to see improvement on Wednesday's defeat in Cadiz: “It was not a good performance, we said that after the game, that was our conclusion. We have to do better and okay, there are reasons, but we always have to perform," he said. "We have to organise better in and out of possession. The midfield [and] offensive line, especially the offensive line, have to be better in the transition. We have to keep the ball better, move the ball through the team, get switches of play in, make runs. We have to do much better.”

30 mins from kickoff: Here are the views from inside the ground. The Benito Villamarin Stadium holds a capacity of 60,000, which is the fourth largest in Spain. They are, however, yet to sell out the stadium with a record crowd of 57,123 when Betis played Valencia in 2019.

60 mins from kickoff: Both teams now have confirmed their starting lineups:

Real Betis (4-2-3-1, right to left) : Silva (GK) — Montoya, Felipe, Ruiz, Moreno — Paul, Canales — Henrique, Rodri, Fekir — Iglesias.

Manchester United (4-3-3, right to left): De Gea (GK) — Wan-Bissaka, Mengi, Lindelof, Williams — McTominay, van de Beek, Iqbal — Elanga, Garnacho, Martial.

This mid-season friendly is being shown exclusively on MUTV, Manchester United's club TV channel. It's only available to stream via MUTV, which is subscription-based.

Which players are available for Manchester United?

Of the 14 players contracted to United who departed for Qatar in November, one — Cristiano Ronaldo — has since left the club entirely, while six are on their way back to Manchester following elimination. Facundo Pellistri (Uruguay) and Christian Eriksen (Denmark) were knocked out in the group stages, while Tyrell Malacia's Netherlands and Fred, Antony and Casemiro of Brazil all saw their tournaments come to an end in the quarter-finals.

None of these six are likely to join up with the squad until the Red Devils return to England ahead of the restart, but United still have several big names to call on in this game. Martin Dubravka played the full match against Cadiz, but first-choice David de Gea returns between the sticks, with the Spain side he missed out on selection for also heading home, having lost on penalties to Morocco in the last eight.
