Christian Pulisic should snub interest from Manchester United as Liverpool or Real Madrid would be better options, says Brian McBride.
The Borussia Dortmund midfielder is expected to be a man in demand this summer after proving himself on a Bundesliga stage and with the U.S. national team.
At 19 years of age, there is plenty of potential still to be unlocked and leading sides across Europe see him as an ideal addition for the present and future.
It could be that Pulisic has several options to consider when the next transfer window opens, but a former Premier League star at Everton and Fulham says he should think carefully about a possible switch to Old Trafford if the opportunity presents itself – even as a United supporter.
McBride told ESPN on the mounting rumours: "When you talk about some of these bigger clubs, they don't necessarily play the same type of soccer they play in Dortmund.
"The thing that's always in the back of your mind is the desire to play at one of the biggest clubs - they are monster clubs, all of them are - and the fun of moving to a different club and working through the process of making it there.
"I would make sure the club plays the style of soccer I play.
“If you're going to Manchester United, you know you're not going to be on the ball nearly as much as you are at Liverpool or Real Madrid."
All three clubs mentioned by McBride have been linked with Pulisic, and the general consensus is that a switch to Spain would be difficult to turn down.
"The exciting part of going to Real Madrid, where every single player on the field around you is world class, it's a desire you sometimes can't turn down,” said McBride.
There is, however, still every chance that the highly-rated youngster will opt to stay put, with Dortmund eager to tie him to an improved contract.
“These are big decisions for you as a player, especially at such a young age," added McBride.
"One, he needs to play, which makes him a candidate to stay.
"He's also in a pretty large sized club with an understanding of the structure, an understanding of the players, an understanding of the style. All those will give you an argument to not leave.
"But as a player, you always want to push the envelope. You always want to make sure you are challenging yourself to the best of your ability to grow as a player. If he feels there are options there, I could see him move.
"He's too mentally strong and mature [to get lost], in my opinion."
